Abstract

Highly oriented thin films of gold, silver, and nickel, vapor-deposited onto single crystal sheets of ruby musovite mica, have been investigated by X-ray diffraction methods. Significant correlations have been observed between the sizes of the metal atoms and the orientations of the films relative to the substrates. In gold and silver films (“large” metal atoms) close packed metal atom directions are inclined by about 30 deg to thea axis of the monoclinic cell of the mica. Along this direction the shortest oxygen-oxygen separation in the mica surface is approximately 5.98A. In nickel films (“small” metal atoms) close packed metal atom directions are essentially parallel to “a”. Along this direction the oxygen-oxygen separation is only 5.18A.
