Abstract

The causation of the epilepsies has been a prominent theme in the past 12 months. Seizures after head injury are an important cause of epilepsy and, sadly, are of increasing concern with blast injuries occurring during contemporary warfare, where body armour protects the trunk but the brain remains vulnerable. In an important epidemiological study from Denmark on children and young adults, data on severe and mild head injury are reported.1 By linkage of head trauma and epilepsy records across the whole country, the authors showed that the risk of epilepsy remained elevated for 10 years for those who had a previous head injury compared with the population risk, even after mild head injury.
