Abstract

Purpose: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a multifactorial, chronic disease that affects the joint by progressively degrading the extracellular matrix (ECM), compromising cartilage integrity. Traditionally, OA has not been considered an inflammatory condition, but recent research has elucidated the significant role of inflammation-related molecules on its pathogenesis. Proinflammatory cytokines overexpression can occur as a consequence of aberrant epigenetic modulation of their genes, which are implicated in the ECM catabolism.
