Epidemiological and Clinical Features of Dermatophytosis in a Referral Practice in Italy: A Retrospective Study in Different Feline Breeds.

Dermatophytosis is an infectious skin disease caused by fungal organisms collectively known as dermatophytes. In cats, the most commonly isolated dermatophyte is Microsporum canis. Known predisposing factors include young age, long hair coat, lifestyle, warm geographical locations and Persian breed. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the prevalence of dermatophytosis in cats of different breeds in a dermatological referral practice in Italy over a 9 year period, highlighting clinical and breed-related differential features. 1457 cats of different breeds, 54 of which were affected by dermatophytosis. Cases of feline dermatophytosis diagnosed between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2024 were searched. Cases were included based on availability of signalment, clinical presentation and confirmation of diagnosis with positive microscopic examination of hair shafts and/or Wood's lamp examination and positive fungal culture. The prevalence of feline dermatophytosis in our sample was 3.7%, with M. canis identified in all cases. Dermatophytosis was more frequently diagnosed in Persian cats (14 of 66, 21.2%) and Persian-related breeds, including British shorthair (10 of 39, 25.6%), exotic shorthair (two of 22, 9.1%) and Scottish fold (two of 20, 10%). Among Domestic short hair (DSH) cats, the prevalence was 2.1%. Young age was a predisposing factor and in pure-bred kittens contagion most likely occurred at the breeder's facility. Pruritus was reported in 63% of the cats. The disease was frequently diagnosed in Persian cats and Persian-related breeds. Cats aged < 1 year are predisposed. Pruritus is common, regardless of the breed.

Skin Commensal Microbiota Does Not Influence the Clinical Course of Dermatophyte Infection in Persian Cats

Background Dermatophytes can be isolated from both symptomatic and asymptomatic cats, yet the role of skin commensals in modulating disease expression remains unclear. This study investigates whether microbial skin communities influence the clinical presentation (symptomatic or asymptomatic) of dermatophyte infection in Persian cats. Hypothesis/Objectives We hypothesised that the fungal and bacterial skin microbiota differ between Persian cats with and without clinical signs of dermatophytosis. The objectives of this study were to compare the fungal and bacterial skin microbiota among healthy, symptomatic, and asymptomatic cats with dermatophytosis and to evaluate the performance of two skin sampling methods (carpet and toothbrush) for microbiome analysis. Animals Forty‐five cats. Material and Methods Cats were grouped according to clinical presentation: Persian cats with skin lesions characteristic of dermatophytosis (multifocal alopecia and scaling) and a positive fungal culture (symptomatic group; n = 15), Persian cats with no skin lesions and a positive fungal culture (asymptomatic group; n = 15), and domestic short hair cats with no history and clinical signs of skin disease and negative fungal culture (negative group; n = 15). Hair and scale samples were collected using carpet and toothbrush techniques from all animals. Fungal and bacterial communities were investigated using high‐throughput sequencing targeting internal transcribed spacer (ITS)1 and 16S ribosomal (r)RNA genes. Results Our data showed that the taxonomic composition of fungal and bacterial communities was similar between symptomatic and asymptomatic cats, regardless of the sampling method used. No notable differences were identified in the relative abundance of Microsporum spp. between symptomatic and asymptomatic cats. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance Our findings suggest that the commensal microbiota may not influence the clinical presentation of dermatophyte infection. Instead, other factors, such as the host immune response, appear to play a pivotal role in determining disease outcomes.

Complicated corneal ulceration in cats: diagnosis and treatment outcomes of 80 cases (2014-2018)

The study describes the most common clinical and endoscopic findings associated with complicated corneal ulcers in cats and evaluates the short-term outcomes after surgical interventions. Eighty client-owned cats of different breeds with corneal ulcers were included. Cats were clinically evaluated to initially determine corneal abnormalities. Endoscopic examination of the corneas was performed to determine anterior and posterior segments’ abnormalities. Non-healing superficial ulcer was treated by superficial keratectomy and deep stromal ulcers were treated using conjunctival flaps. Corneal sequestrum were treated by partial keratectomies and conjunctival flaps. Anterior synechiae were treated via peripheral iridectomy and separation of the adhesion between the iris and the inner cornea. Symblepharon were treated by removal of the adhered conjunctival membrane from the cornea. Unresponsive endophthalmitis was treated surgically by exenteration. Outcomes after surgical managements of selected corneal abnormalities were assessed clinically and endoscopically. Non-healing superficial ulcer, deep stromal ulcer with descemetocele, endophthalmitis, symblepharon, corneal sequestration and anterior synechiae with secondary glaucoma and corneal scarring were the recorded complications of corneal ulcer. FHV-1 was a common etiologic factor of corneal ulceration. Persistent corneal scars of varying shape and size developed in cats with deep stromal ulcer, anterior synechiae, and corneal sequestration. Domestic shorthaired and Persian cats were the most predisposed breeds to FHV-1 infection and subsequent corneal ulceration. Management of patients with corneal ulcer would prevent serious complications. No age or sex predisposition to complicated corneal ulceration in cats was noticed.

The frequency of feline AB blood types and the risk of incompatibility reactions in Bangkok, Thailand, and vicinities.

Mismatched blood transfusions and neonatal isoerythrolysis (NI) are life-threatening conditions in cats. The distribution of feline blood types, which varies geographically, can estimate the risks of mismatched transfusion reactions and NI due to random mating. The objectives were to determine the frequency of feline AB blood types in Bangkok, Thailand, and surrounding vicinities and calculate the risks of transfusion reactions and NI in domestic shorthair (DSH) cats. A standard tube method was performed to analyze the A/B antigen on erythrocytes. Reverse typing was performed to confirm blood types B and AB. Domestic shorthair (n=229) and purebred (n=91) cats were prospectively recruited from 39 districts in Bangkok and 11 districts in four nearby provinces. Overall, 97.5% and 2.5% of the cats were type A and type B, respectively. No cats were type AB. All DSH cats were type A. Type B blood was found in 17.1% of Persian and 4% of Scottish Fold cats. Due to the blood type frequencies in DSH cats, the potential risk of major transfusion reactions, minor transfusion reactions, or NI was 0%. This is a large study of feline blood types in Bangkok and vicinities. Type A blood was predominant in DSH cats and associated with a minimal risk for mismatched transfusion reactions and NI. Blood types A and B were found in Persian and Scottish Fold cats. Blood typing is mandatory for blood transfusion procedures and breeding purposes in cat populations.

Diagnosis and treatment of dermatophytosis in dogs and cats.: Clinical Consensus Guidelines of the World Association for Veterinary Dermatology.

Dermatophytosis is a superficial fungal skin disease of cats and dogs. The most common pathogens of small animals belong to the genera Microsporum and Trichophyton. It is an important skin disease because it is contagious, infectious and can be transmitted to people. The objective of this document is to review the existing literature and provide consensus recommendations for veterinary clinicians and lay people on the diagnosis and treatment of dermatophytosis in cats and dogs. The authors served as a Guideline Panel(GP) and reviewed the literature available prior to September 2016. The GP prepared a detailed literature review and made recommendations on selected topics. The World Association of Veterinary Dermatology (WAVD) provided guidance and oversight for this process. A draft of the document was presented at the 8th World Congress of Veterinary Dermatology (May 2016) and was then made available via the World Wide Web to the member organizations of the WAVD for a period of threemonths. Comments were solicited and posted to the GP electronically. Responses were incorporated by the GP into the final document. No one diagnostic test was identified as the gold standard. Successful treatment requires concurrent use of systemic oral antifungals and topical disinfection of the hair coat. Wood's lamp and direct examinations have good positive and negative predictability, systemic antifungal drugs have a wide margin of safety and physical cleaning is most important for decontamination of the exposed environments. Finally, serious complications of animal-human transmission are exceedingly rare.

Reproductive performance of cat breeds in Bangladesh

This study was carried out in the Rangpur Division, Bangladesh, to identify domestic cat breeds and assess their reproductive performance. Data were obtained through direct questionnaire administered to cat owners, complemented by regular observation of breed characteristics, behaviour, and reproductive traits. Ten breeds were identified: Indigenous, Persian, Persian (Calico), Maine Coon, Bengal Cat, Mixed, British Shorthair, Turkish Angora, Scottish Fold and American Shorthair. Common oestrus signs included vocalization, rolling, rubbing of the body and genital area, affectionate behaviour, and receptivity to male. The age at sexual maturity among females ranged from 6 to 23 months, with Persian cats exhibiting the highest mean age at maturity (16.2 ± 3.8 months, P&lt;0.05). Oestrus cycle length varied from 7 to 45 days, with Bengal cats having the longest cycle (25.5 ± 6.4 days, P&lt;0.05). Indigenous cats generally matured in spring and summer, although some showed year-round oestrus when housed with tomcats. Gestation lasted 57 – 67 days, with no significant difference between breeds; the longest was recorded in Scottish Folds (64.2 ± 2.4 days). Litter sizes ranged from 2 to 10 kittens, with Bengal cats producing the largest average litters (6.0 ± 3.5 kitten). Postpartum oestrus began 30–90 days after parturition. Pregnancy rates were highest in Indigenous cats (86.1%) and lowest in Scottish Folds (77.8%). Abortion rates were highest in Scottish Folds (28.6%) and lowest in Indigenous cats (16.1%). The sex ratio of kittens was approximately 49 males to 50 females. Kitten mortality was highest in Persian cats (21.8%) and lowest in American Shorthairs (11.8%). These findings provide valuable insights into breed-specific reproductive physiology, which can support breeding management strategies and inform veterinary reproductive care. Bang. vet. 2025. Application of Wood's lamp in the diagnosis of superficial cutaneous fungal infections.

Objective To estimate the performance of Wood's lamp examination in the diagnosis of superficial cutaneous fungal infections. Methods Totally, 129 patients, who were diagnosed with superficial cutaneous fungal infections according to clinical medical history and signs, were enrolled in this study. Wood's lamp examination of lesions was carried out. Cutaneous samples were obtained from the patients and subjected to microscopic examination and fungal culture. Results Wood's lamp examination was positive in 84% and 85.7% of patients with tinea versicolor and malassezia folliculitis, respectively; among these patients positive for Wood's lamp examination, 92.9% were positive for fungal culture, and 87.5% for microscopic examination. In patients clinically diagnosed with tinea manus and pedis, tinea corporis or tinea cruris, 8.3% were positive for Wood's lamp examination, while 85.4% were positive for fungal examination. There was a high consistency between Wood's lamp examination and fungal examination in patients with tinea versicolor and malassezia folliculitis, but not in those with tinea manus and pedis, tinea corporis or tinea cruris. Conclusions Wood's lamp examination shows a high specificity and sensitivity and is useful in the diagnosis of tinea versicolor and malassezia folliculitis, but seems unapplicable for the diagnosis of tinea manus and pedis, tinea corporis or tinea cruris.

Association between patient-related factors and risk of calcium oxalate and magnesium ammonium phosphate urolithiasis in cats.

To determine whether breed, age, sex, or reproductive status (i.e., neutered versus sexually intact) was associated with the apparent increase in prevalence of calcium oxalate (CaOx) uroliths and the decrease in prevalence of magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) uroliths in cats over time. Case-control study. Case cats consisted of cats with CaOx (n = 7,895) or MAP (7,334) uroliths evaluated at the Minnesota Urolith Center between 1981 and 1997. Control cats consisted of cats without urinary tract disease admitted to veterinary teaching hospitals in the United States and Canada during the same period (150,482). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were performed. British Shorthair, Exotic Shorthair, Foreign Shorthair, Havana Brown, Himalayan, Persian, Ragdoll, and Scottish Fold cats had an increased risk of developing CaOx uroliths, as did male cats and neutered cats. Chartreux, domestic shorthair, Foreign Shorthair, Himalayan, Oriental Shorthair, and Ragdoll cats had an increased risk of developing MAP uroliths, as did female cats and neutered cats. Cats with CaOx uroliths were significantly older than cats with MAP uroliths. Results suggest that changes in breed, age, sex, or reproductive status did not contribute to the apparent reciprocal relationship between prevalences of CaOx and MAP uroliths in cats during a 17-year period. However, cats of particular breeds, ages, sex, and reproductive status had an increased risk of developing CaOx and MAP uroliths.

Estimation of vertebral heart size and cardiothoracic ratio in Persian cats.

The study aimed to determine the reference values related to vertebral heart size (VHS) and cardiothoracic ratio (CTR), which are effective in the evaluation of the thorax diseases and especially cardiomegaly of the brachycephalic cats using the morphometric data of thorax and heart obtained from the radiographic images of the thoracic region of the Persian cats. It was determined that lying position during radiography did not affect VHS and CTR values. Also, the sex factor did not have a significance on these values. The fact that the VHS value of 8.16 thoracic vertebrae averagely found in the Persian cats is higher than 7.5 thoracic vertebrae value averagely stated in the studies conducted with the cats of different breeds is considered since the breed is brachycephalic.

Prevalence of Malassezia spp. yeasts in feline nail folds: a cytological and mycological study

Malassezia spp. yeasts are commensal organisms of mammal and avian skin, but little is known about their presence on the skin of healthy cats. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the prevalence of Malassezia spp. yeasts in feline nail folds and to identify the different species. Forty-six cats of different breeds were evaluated by cytological examination, and Malassezia spp. yeasts were seen in 61% of them. Yeasts were found in 100% of Devon Rex cats [mean 8.63/oil immersion field (high-power field - HPF)]. Conversely, only 42% of cats of other breeds (domestic short-haired and Persian) were positive (mean 0.59/HPF). Twenty-one cats of different breeds were subsequently evaluated by fungal culture. Malassezia pachydermatis was isolated from 52%, M. furfur from 38%, and M. sympodialis from 9.5% of the cats. More than one species was observed in eight of 21 cats, six of which were Devon Rex. Malassezia spp. yeasts are common inhabitants of feline nail folds, especially in Devon Rex cats, and the presence of a high number of yeasts on cytology correlates with the clinical observation of brown, greasy material in the nail folds. M. pachydermatis and two lipid-dependent species were isolated from both Devon Rex cats and cats of other breeds.

Thoracic vertebral canal stenosis in cats: clinical features, diagnostic imaging findings, treatment and outcome.

The aim of this study was to describe the clinical features, diagnostic imaging findings, treatment and outcome in cats with thoracic vertebral canal stenosis (TVCS). Medical records and imaging studies of cats with TVCS were retrospectively reviewed. Outcome was acquired from patient records and from owners or referring veterinary surgeons via a telephone questionnaire. For each case, breed-, age- and sex-matched controls were identified with CT imaging of the thoracic vertebral column. For each cat, vertebral canal height was determined at three levels for each thoracic vertebra. Vertebral canal heights were compared between control cats of different breeds and between affected and control cats of the same breed. Nine TVCS cases were included. British Shorthairs and male neutered cats were over-represented (P <0.05). Median age at presentation was 9 years. All cats were presented for a chronic, progressive, painful, ambulatory, T3-L3 myelopathy. Five cats were treated conservatively, three surgically and one was euthanased. Two cats treated surgically demonstrated improvement of clinical signs and one demonstrated initial improvement followed by deterioration. Of the conservatively treated cats, three deteriorated and two improved. Compared with controls, affected cats had a lower vertebral canal height at multiple thoracic vertebral levels, being most prominent for British Shorthairs and domestic shorthairs (P <0.05). Unaffected British Shorthairs had a lower thoracic vertebral canal height at multiple levels than control domestic shorthairs (P <0.05). TVCS should be considered a differential diagnosis in middle-aged to older cats presenting with a chronic, progressive, painful, T3-L3 myelopathy. The predisposition of British Shorthairs could be explained by a narrower vertebral canal in this breed.

Detection and Genetic Analysis of Feline Coronavirus in Clinically Suspected Cats

Feline coronavirus (FCoV) is a common infection in cats, producing outcomes that differ from mild intestinal disease to the fatal form known as feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). Accurate antemortem diagnosis is challenging, and reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) targeting the nucleocapsid (N) gene offers high sensitivity and specificity, while phylogenetic analysis reveals viral variation. The present study aimed to detect FCoV in clinically suspected cats using RT-qPCR and to analyze the phylogenetic relationships of local isolates from Yogyakarta, Indonesia. A total of 45 clinical samples, consisting of 14 ascitic fluid and 31 blood samples, were collected from cats of different breeds (mixed, domestic shorthair, and Persian), aged 0.5-4 years, including 22 males and 23 females, that were presented to seven veterinary clinics in Yogyakarta with clinical signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal effusion, uveitis, and ataxia. The RT-qPCR revealed 62.2% (28/45) positive cases, with detection rates of 100% (14/14) in ascitic fluid and 45.2% (14/31) in blood. The most frequent clinical findings among FCoV-positive cats were abdominal distension (50%), uveitis (32.1%), ataxia (21.4%), and rhinitis (17.9%). Most infected cats (71.4%) were under two years of age, with a slightly higher prevalence in males (57.1%). Phylogenetic analysis of three isolates from ascitic fluid demonstrated a close genetic relationship with strains from Italy, the United Kingdom, and China, clustering into two distinct clades. The present study highlighted the utility of RT-qPCR targeting the N gene as a reliable diagnostic tool for clinical cases, while providing new clinicopathological and molecular data on naturally occurring FCoV infection in Indonesia. These findings contribute to the global understanding of FCoV molecular epidemiology and support future surveillance and control strategies for coronavirus infections in domestic cats.

Epidemiological evaluation of cats associated with feline polycystic kidney disease caused by the feline PKD1 genetic mutation in Japan

Feline polycystic kidney disease (PKD), an inherited autosomal dominant disease, has been reported to occur mostly in Persian or Persian related cats, and to be associated with a mutationfrom C to A at position 10063 in exon 29 of the feline PKD1 gene (PKD1 mutation). Many clinical cases have been recognized in Japan, but the mutation ratein cats has not been reported. The objective of this study was to determine epidemiological characteristics and clinical features in cats with the PKD1 mutation. Referringveterinarians sent blood samples of 377 cats for the PKD1 gene evaluation. The blood samples were from 159 cats with renal cysts confirmed by ultrasonography, 60 catswithout renal cysts, and 158 cats that did not undergo ultrasonography. In total, 150 cats carried the PKD1 mutation and the signalment, site and number of renal cysts, andresults of blood test were evaluated in cats with the PKD1 mutation. The breeds with the highest rate of the PKD1 mutation were Persian (46%), Scottish Fold(54%) and American Shorthair cats (47%). However, mixed breed cats also showed high rates of the PKD1 mutation. Of cats with the mutation, the incidence of high plasmacreatinine (≥1.6 mg/dl) was greater in cats ≥3 years old, although a few cats ≥9 years of age had low plasma creatinine (<1.6 mg/dl). The coincidence ofrenal and hepatic cysts was 12.6%, with the high prevalence in Persian cats (31%).

A comparison of corneal sensitivity between brachycephalic and Domestic Short-haired cats.

To compare sensitivity of the central and peripheral cornea of brachycephalic and Domestic Short-haired (DSH) cats. Prospective study. Fifty DSH, thirteen Persian, and seven Himalayan cats. CRITERIA FOR INCLUSION: Healthy DSH, Persian, or Himalayan cats older than 6 months, with a normal ophthalmic examination and Sno-strip values greater than or equal to 5 mm wetting/60 s. Corneal sensitivity was measured using a Cochet-Bonnet aesthesiometer. The cornea was touched using the tip of the monofilament, decreasing the fiber length in 5 mm increments until a blink reflex occurred. Corneal touch threshold was defined as the stimulus that elicited a corneal blink reflex greater than 50% of the time. Mean central and peripheral corneal touch threshold (CTT, +/- SD in gm/mm2) for the DSH cats were 1.79 +/- 2.33 and 5.01 +/- 5.07 in the right eye (OD), and 1.74 +/- 1.65 and 5.02 +/- 4.55 in the left eye (OS). Mean central and peripheral CTT +/- SD (gm/mm2) for the brachycephalic cats were 4.09 +/- 5.29 and 6.18 +/- 5.65 OD, and 3.18 +/- 3.75 and 7.66 +/- 6.24 OS. Statistical analysis of the data revealed a significantly higher CTT in the central (P = 0.019) and peripheral (P = 0.003) cornea of brachycephalic than DSH cats. When evaluated for gender, this difference persisted in female cats, but did not hold true for male cats. A significant difference in CTT was found between central and peripheral cornea within both groups of cats. The central cornea is less sensitive in brachycephalic than DSH cats. The central cornea is more sensitive than the peripheral cornea in both brachycephalic and DSH cats.

In-depth study of Wood's lamp examination combined with reflective confocal laser scanning microscopy for the guidance of vitiligo staging and treatment.

Both Wood's lamp and reflective confidential laser scanning microcopy are helpful for the diagnosis and treatment of vitiligo. However, there is few research that contains large samples and consistent observations. To analyze the characteristics of Wood's lamp images and reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) images of vitiligo lesions and to evaluate their significance in vitiligo staging. We analyzed the characteristics of RCM images, Wood's lamp images, the vitiligo disease activity (VIDA) score, and clinical features to guide vitiligo staging and treatment. The expert consensus based on the clinical features, VIDA score, Wood's lamp findings, and isomorphic response was consistent with the Wood's lamp findings (χ2 = 3.63, p > 0.05) and RCM findings (χ2 = 3.60, p > 0.05) in diagnosing vitiligo and assessing the disease stage. There was a correlation between the three lesion grades based on the Wood's lamp findings and the stage of vitiligo (p < 0.01). Dermatophytosis in cats: ABCD guidelines on prevention and management.

Dermatophytosis, usually caused by Microsporum canis, is the most common fungal infection in cats worldwide, and one of the most important infectious skin diseases in this species. Many adult cats are asymptomatic carriers. Severe clinical signs are seen mostly in kittens or immunosuppressed adults. Poor hygiene is a predisposing factor, and the disease may be endemic in shelters or catteries. Humans may be easily infected and develop a similar skin disease. Infectious arthrospores produced by dermatophytes may survive in the environment for about a year. They are transmitted through contact with sick cats or healthy carriers, but also on dust particles, brushes, clothes and other fomites. Circular alopecia, desquamation and sometimes an erythematous margin around central healing ('ringworm') are typical. In many cats this is a self-limiting disease with hair loss and scaling only. In immunosuppressed animals, the outcome may be a multifocal or generalised skin disease. Wood's lamp examination and microscopic detection of arthrospores on hairs are simple methods to confirm M canis infection, but their sensitivity is relatively low. The gold standard for detection is culture on Sabouraud agar of hairs and scales collected from new lesions. In shelters and catteries eradication is difficult. Essential is a combination of systemic and topical treatments, maintained for several weeks. For systemic therapy itraconazole is the drug of choice, terbinafine an alternative. Recommended topical treatment is repeated body rinse with an enilconazole solution or miconazole with or without chlorhexidine. In catteries/shelters medication must be accompanied by intensive decontamination of the environment. Few efficacy studies on anti-M canis vaccines (prophylactic or therapeutic) for cats have been published, and a safe and efficient vaccine is not available.
