Abstract

The pandemic caused by the newly discovered severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and the disease it produces (COVID-19) has had a great social and health impact worldwide, and represents a public health challenge The first cases were detected in December 2019, and to this day the number of confirmed cases and deaths continues to rise Human-to-human transmission of SARS-CoV-2 occurs mainly through respiratory droplets, and the degree of infectivity of the disease is remarkable, making it necessary to adopt strict isolation measures In most cases, COVID-19 produces a mild-to-moderate condition, but it may lead to a very serious clinical picture, mainly marked by the onset of respiratory distress The pathogenic mechanisms are complex and involve viral and other aspects that are associated with an exaggerated inflammatory response, which has been observed in severe forms of COVID-19 and their complications Supportive treatment is essential as no specific and highly effective treatment has yet been developed In this situation, multidisciplinary care and, in particular, palliative care is necessary in order to ensure the well-being of patients
