Abstract

Despite that recently released reviews of NASA's Mission to Planet Earth (MPE) expressed concerns about the cost and direction of the program—as have House Republicans, the program seems to be more popular in the Senate. The Senate Commerce Subcommittee held a supportive hearing on MPE earlier this month. Chaired by Conrad Burns (R‐Mont.), the subcommittee heard testimony lauding the mission. Burns, himself, stated that the MPE has the potential to “pay for itself.” On the critical side, House Science Committee Chair Robert S. Walker (R‐Pa.) released a preliminary General Accounting Office (GAO) report and a report from the Marshall Institute that questioned NASA's intentions to reduce costs of the program.
