Abstract

The social behavior of terrestrial plethodontids has been widely studied. (reviewed by Jaeger, R. G., and D. C. Forester. 1993)In particular, territorial behavior has received considerable attention (Mathis et al., 1995). Territoriality appears to be widespread among terrestrial salamanders. It mediates inter-and intraspecific competition, and thereby shapes salamander distributions, regulates salamander communities, and causes the extinction and replacement of some plethodontid populations (Hairston, 1987, 1996;Jaeger and Forester, 1993). Because of the importance of territorial behavior in terrestrial salamander ecology, studies on how and why salamander territoriality varies are needed.
