Abstract
Environmental problems of desalination may result from excessive withdrawals of surface water and from indiscriminate discharge of brines differing in chemical character and temperature from ambient conditions. Nature and magnitude of the problem varies with the site of the facility, source of feed water, type of desalination process and discharge practices. This paper documents methods of handling these problems at existing and proposed plants in the United States.
