Environmental Awareness and Practices among High School Students: Basis for Disaster Preparedness Program
This study assessed environmental awareness and practices among 935 high school students in the Philippines, finding high levels of awareness and practices overall, with significant correlations between them; students in coastal areas showed moderate levels, highlighting the need for environmental education focused on greening and ecological balance.
Inhabitants of Mother Earth are now experiencing the effects of climate change, global warming, ozone depletion, pollution, species extinction, desertification and improper waste management. This phenomenon is global and the Philippines is not exempted from these environmental threats and challenges. Thus, this study on environmental awareness and practices among high school students was conducted. To address this problem, the researchers used descriptive-correlational method utilizing the developed research instrument administered to the 935 participants. Findings of the study revealed that high school students’ extent of awareness and practices was great while moderate in the greening of the environment. Likewise, the same results were obtained when participants were grouped according to the selected variables. However, when grouped according to topography, the extent of awareness and practices of those living in the coastal areas was moderate. Furtheremore, signficnat differences among high school students environmental awareness and practices were observed on the greening of the environment, elimination of pollutants, and maintaning ecological balance. Significant correlation was also noted between high school students awareness and practices. This means that high school students environmental awareness is related to their practices. Thus, it is about time that schools should advocate and integrate environmental education with emphasis on the greening of the environment.

A specific type of casual relationship known as "Friends with Benefits" (FWB) is becoming increasingly popular among youth. However, current research has often examined the dating practices of urban college students, resulting in a limited understanding of rural youth. Potential risk factors associated with FWB include increased sexual risk behavior. The current study examined FWB among rural high school and college students (N = 100). No differences emerged in the rates of FWB between high school and college youth or males and females. College students and those participating in FWB reported more sexual risk behavior than high school students and those never engaging in FWB. Results suggest that FWB relationships are common among high school students and rural youth.

Rapid industrialization, overexploitation of natural resources and use of environmentally abhorrent materials have caused detectable environmental disruptions which have threatened the life support system. Environment can be protected only by creating awareness among the people so that it becomes part of their lifestyle. Environmental Awareness means showing interest towards environment or environmental problem. It implies not only understanding about environment but also attitude, principles and abilities which are essential for solving environmental problems. Moreover, environmental awareness helps in inculcating responsible behaviour among citizens. The present study is an attempt to study the environmental awareness of high school students with respect to gender and medium of instruction. The present study has used Descriptive research method. 160 students of Majuli district (Assam) were selected as sample of the study. In the present study the researcher has used random sampling technique. Environment Awareness Ability Measure (EAAM) tool prepared by Dr Praveen Kumar Jha was used in the study. The data was analyzed by using descriptive statistics such as mean and standard deviation and inferential statistics like t test. The results revealed that the level of Environmental Awareness of high school students was above average. High school students differ significantly in environmental awareness with regard to the gender. Female high school students showed low environmental awareness among them in comparison to their male counterparts. The study also found that high school students studying in Assamese medium schools have a higher level of awareness regarding the environment in comparison to high school students studying in English medium schools

The purpose of this research was to determine whether classroom time spent on soil science-related topics was correlated with students' environmental knowledge, environmental attitude, and environmental behaviour. Few studies have documented the lack of time for teachers to incorporate soil science-related topics into their curricula, and the limited extent to which these topics are really being implemented. Three hundred and sixty students from three different secondary institutions in the Kuala Terengganu district were questioned using structured and validated questionnaires in this study. The data was analysed using the mean, standard deviation, t-test, analysis of variance and Pearson correlation. In this study, we found that high school students in the sampling area had a moderate degree of environmental knowledge, environmental behaviour, and environmental attitude. It was shown that there were statistically significant differences in environmental knowledge between men and women, and that environmental attitudes varied significantly amongst educational institutions. Environmental attitudes and practice did not differ significantly across sexes, between science and non-science majors, or between schools. According to the results of this research, classroom educators devote an average of only 5.24 hours annually to teaching about soil science. Significant relationships were discovered between environmental knowledge and teachers' time devoted to soil science-related topics in formal education and students' gender; environmental attitude and students' stream; students' gender; and environmental practise; and environmental attitude, students' stream; students' gender; and environmental practise.

This study aims to investigate Kazakhstani high school students’ environmental knowledge, attitude toward the environment, environmental awareness, and environmental concern, and to present the effect of various extracurricular activities on high school students’ knowledge, attitude, awareness, and concern. We surveyed 124 students at various grade levels. Results indicated that Kazakhstani students did not have a strong environmental knowledge base and their awareness of environmental issues is not strong at all, but they had a strong positive environmental attitude. There was no significant relationship between knowledge, attitude, and awareness based on grades in biology, chemistry, physics, math, and geography. Gender did not influence students’ environmental knowledge, attitudes, and awareness but year in school did for environmental knowledge. Kazakhstani students were most concerned about air pollution, pollution of rivers and seas, and flooding, and they were the least concerned with overpopulation, radioactive waste, extinction of species, and climate change. Extracurricular activities did prove useful with increasing students’ knowledge and awareness about environmental challenges but did not impact their environmental attitude. Our results imply that what is being taught about the environment in Kazakhstani schools is not substantial enough. Educators may modify the curriculum to better address environmental issues in the classroom and add more content and activities.

The study aimed to determine the level of environmental awareness and practices among senior high school students, to create an intervention plan based on the results of quantitative analysis. A descriptive-correlational research design was employed, involving 320 senior high school students selected through stratified random sampling from four public secondary schools in Pantukan. Two adapted and validated questionnaires were used for data collection, and statistical tools such as mean, standard deviation, Pearson’s r, and linear regression were applied. The results showed that students exhibited a high level of environmental awareness and a highly extensive environmental participation, which means it is often observed. In addition, a significant positive correlation was evident between environmental awareness and environmental behavior. These results indicate that although students have already demonstrated good environmental behavior by exhibiting high-level environmental practices attributes, it is still important to reinforce this awareness with structured programs. Based on these results, there is a need to revise a program to sustain and enhance further the level of students’ environmental practices. The plan aims to strengthen environmental awareness, encourage sustained ecological actions among senior high school students, and ensure the continuity of environmental initiatives in school and the community. The enhanced paced of development activities and rapid urbanization has resulted in stress on natural resources and quality of life. Humans are responsible for depletion of the natural resources. Environment can be seen to consist of two major components: natural - atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and biosphere environments and social or man-made environments. As a result of human intelligence, man has great influence on her biological and physical environment. Often time the influence is detrimental to the environment causing soil degradation and erosion, deforestation and desertification, and pollution. Other effects are adverse climate change such as ozone layer depletion, global warming and acid rain. The importance of environment and the complex nature of its components as well as the benefits that could accrue to mankind based in its awareness has given birth to the discipline of environmental education. The tremendous signification of the message of environmental education for the survival of man has made the relatively new academic discipline to attract great attention. The involvement of public in the implementation of environmental education programmes and campaigns cannot be over-emphasized but this is not the case. Air, water and soil pollution is on the increase. To minimize these problems, environmental awareness is imperative. Lack of adequate environmental knowledge is an obstacle in achieving a sustainable future for humankind at both global and local levels. Measuring the level of environmental awareness in a population can be difficult but environmental awareness programme can help reduce the impacts of human activities on the environment. Use of press media, awareness raising campaigns, incorporation in mainstream education (basic, secondary and tertiary), public participation in environmental matters, celebrities in media campaigns and civic education are some of the ways by which environmental education can be heralded. Educating adult, community, traditional and religious leaders on the importance of environmental health and on the well use of the natural environment is also very critical to sustainable development. This paper is an attempt to review the meaning of environment education, its aims and objectives, and ways of promoting environmental awareness in the society. It also considered how environmental education can be implemented in many contexts. The paper concluded with recommendations of ways of sensitizing the public on the need to be environmental conscious. DOI: 10.5901/jesr.2014.v4n3p333

The primary objective of this study was to investigate bedroom environment and parental awareness surrounding junior and high school students. A secondary aim was to explore the relationship between these factors and sleep-related problems in adolescents. A web-based questionnaire survey was conducted in October 2023 with responses from 590 parents of junior high school students and 607 parents of high school students. The survey assessed bedroom environment, parental awareness, and adolescents’ lifestyles and sleep. Descriptive statistics were used to determine the actual conditions of the bedroom environment and parental awareness. To examine the factors associated with sleep-related problems in adolescents, we conducted logistic regression analysis. Approximately 40% of the adolescents had bedrooms with east-facing windows, and more than half used blackout curtains. Seventy percent of parents of junior high school students and 60% of parents of high school students paid attention to adolescents’ sleep duration. Logistic regression analyses showed that sleep-related problems were not significantly associated with the bedroom environment, whereas higher parental awareness of ensuring adequate sleep time was associated with reduced odds of insufficient sleep (OR = 0.36 in junior high school students, OR = 0.49 in high school students; p < 0.05) and late chronotype (OR = 0.57 and 0.63, respectively; p < 0.05) in both groups. This study clarified the bedroom environment and parental awareness of adolescents. While bedroom environment showed no association with sleep-related problems, parental awareness remained crucial in addressing these issues in both junior and high school students.Supplementary InformationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s41105-025-00601-z.

This article focuses on the role of audiobooks in the reading practices of students. Possible risks and benefits of audiobook use are explored. Data from a survey are presented to determine attitudes toward audiobook use. Emphasis is placed on cognitive, affective, and behavioral aspects of attitude. The study set out to investigate under what conditions participants would prefer to use audiobooks; what motivates the choice of a particular audiobook; to what extent participants identify their experience of reading paper as the same/different from listening to audiobooks; and what texts are preferred to listen to when working with audiobooks. An additional aim of the study was to find out whether there was a difference between students' and non-students' attitudes to using audiobooks. The survey involved 27 students from language schools in Sofia and 32 students from ”St. Kliment Ohridski University”. The findings show that: listening to audiobooks is combined with performing everyday routine activities; the attitude to listening to audiobooks does not differ significantly between students and high school students; listening to audiobooks in order to prepare for exams is becoming more common practice in both high school and college students; the presence of metacognitive learning strategies (note-taking while listening) in order to improve comprehension is observed in students to a higher degree compared to high school students.

Global warming and climate change are serious issues facing humanity at present and education needs to focus on including informed-decision in classroom practices. The conceptual framework used in this study has provided interconnections that influence beliefs and understandings in providing a knowledge base for making “informed-decision” among high school students. This study was conducted in three year 9 classes in two high schools in the UK and among 65 students. An inquiry intervention model was developed using the 5E instructional model (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate) to identify beliefs and understanding and to strengthen students’ knowledge base. This study used a design-based research setting and utilised a mixed methodology. The Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were computed to examine the pre-post-difference among questionnaire items, and structural equation modelling (SEM) was utilised to explore the relationship between belief, understanding, and intention. Data analysis of the intervention revealed that students developed a strong understanding of the causes and effects of global warming. There is evidence that students used that knowledge to “inform-decision” in relation to global warming and climate change. Promoting informed decision-making through science teaching can encourage responsible action in the future. The real gap identified in this study is that the regular school curriculum does not engage socio-scientific issues in the real world and has no opportunity to organise an inquiry-based instructional sequence for informed decision-making.
