Abstract

In 1971, the EKD decided to support the foundation of Protestant universities of applied sciences (EFHs) under the auspices of the regional churches. The background to this was a paradigmshift away from diakonia as mission towards the political diakonia of social action and the crisis of association and institutional diakonia in the 1960s. Using the example of three locations of today’s EFHs (Bochum, Hamburg, Hanover), this article illustrates what a break with tradition the transformation of the colleges of social work meant. Finally, the question is raised as to the past and present significance of Protestant sponsorship for a university of applied science in the social sector.
