When I was invited to participate in this symposium, I was told that it was to be a “program on self-analysis,” and I was given the assignment of discussing the prospects for the microbial control of insects. Further, the charge given me was: “Evaluate the status of insect control by microbial pathogens and philosphize on the prospects and limitation of this type of control. How costly is it? How permanent? What is in it for industry? What toxicological testing is needed to insure safety for man, domestic animals, and wildlife?” To respond to this charge adequately would require more time than we have available here this morning; moreover, a number of insect pathologists, including myself, have already expressed in print their opinions on precisely these points.
