Abstract

BackgroundAs a result of pandemic restrictions, faculty determined that there was an immediate need for innovative telehealth simulation experiences to be integrated in the nursing curricula. To meet this need, an evolving hybrid simulation scenario that transitioned a standardized telehealth client to the emergency department was created. A gaming platform was also incorporated throughout the simulation. MethodsAdult Learning Theory and Socratic method were the frameworks for the creation, implementation, and evaluation of the simulation experience. The Telehealth Triage Documentation Form and a scenario matrix were implemented. ResultsStudents were able to practice effective telepresence, teamwork, and clinical judgment competencies during the various stages of the simulation experience. Remote and face-to-face learners had the ability to fully participate in every aspect of the two-hour clinical experience. ConclusionStudents and standardized patients experiencing their first telehealth simulation are better able to meet learning outcomes when a customized documentation form and script are implemented. Tacit knowledge related to telehealth is developed over time through recurrent simulation experiences offered across the curricula. Educational gaming platforms can be successfully integrated into hybrid simulation experiences.
