  • Sreepoorna Pramodh

ObjectiveHealthy lifestyle and adequate reproductive health knowledge are prerequisites for maintenance of physical and mental well-being of women across the world. With increasing prevalence of metabolic disorders such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), it is important that sufficient awareness of these issues is generated, especially in conservative communities in Arab regions. The main objective of this study is to assess reproductive health (RH) knowledge and awareness of PCOS among female Emirati students and also to explore their lifestyle choices.Materials and MethodsA total of 493 Emirati students were recruited based on convenience sampling and completed a survey containing questions related to demography, lifestyle preferences, RH knowledge, and PCOS awareness.ResultsOf the students, 13% self-reported being diagnosed with PCOS, with 3.5% also taking medication for the same, 6% reported having high androgen levels, 30.7% reported polymenorrhea, and 3.5% reported oligomenorrhea for frequency of menstrual cycle. Also, 12.4% students experienced abnormal bleeding (heavy/none) during menstruation and 24% reported excessive body hair. It was found that 4.3% of students were taking medication for hyperglycemia and 75% of students reported a family history of diabetes. Students displayed low reproductive health knowledge and poor awareness of PCOS. Lifestyle preferences indicated low physical activity and high indulgence in fast food.ConclusionLifestyle choices adopted by Emirati University students may predispose them to disorders such as PCOS. Early detection and management of PCOS coupled with a dynamic awareness campaign for RH can help in improving fertility rates of Emirati women. The study identifies major gaps in knowledge and awareness of RH and PCOS in Emirati women that need to be addressed by creating a culturally congruent heathcare policy with emphasis on education and health promotion. Mandatory PA programs and increasing availability of healthy eating options in campus should be considered by all universities, particularly in Arab regions, for improving lifestyle and preventing metabolic disorders in young students.

Background: reproduction is an important aspect in health development, especially for adolescents who are in the transition period from childhood to adulthood. Adolescents in coastal areas often face unique challenges that impact their knowledge of reproductive health. These factors can be social, economic, cultural, as well as access to information and health services Methods: This research uses a quantitative approach with a survey method. Data was collected through questionnaires distributed to teenagers in coastal areas. Respondents were randomly selected from several middle and high schools in the area. Data analysis was carried out using statistical software to identify factors that significantly influence adolescent reproductive health knowledge . Results: The results of the study show that factors such as parental education, access to information (0.000), the role of schools (0.037), and peer (0.000) influence significantly influence the level of reproductive health knowledge of adolescents in coastal areas. On the other hand , cultural and economic values of the family also play an important role, but their impact varies more depending on the specific context of each community Conclusion: Knowledge of adolescent reproductive health in coastal areas is influenced by various interrelated factors. Efforts to increase this knowledge must include a holistic approach, involving parental education, increasing access to information, strengthening the role of schools, and addressing cultural norms that hinder it. Intervention programs that focus on teacher training, health campaigns through the media, and improving health facilities in coastal areas can help increase knowledge of adolescent reproductive health.

When they reach puberty, adolescents need to learn about reproductive health. Giving adolescents health education to prevent issues with their reproductive health is one method to boost their awareness of reproductive health. The purpose of this study is to determine how health education has affected students' knowledge of reproductive health. 24 persons were gathered using the convenience sample method. Pre-experimental design with one-group pretest-post-test design is the technique employed. A questionnaire was employed as a research tool during the data collection process. The Wilcoxon test is the method of data analysis that is utilized. The findings revealed that students' knowledge had an average value of 82 percent before receiving health education, and an average value of 84 percent after receiving health education. There was no significant difference in the knowledge of adolescents before and after receiving health education, according to the findings of the hypothesis test, which had an alpha error rate of 0.05. It might be said that health education has little impact on the degree of knowledge held by teenagers.

What’s Religion Got to Do with It? Exploring College Students’ Sexual and Reproductive Health Knowledge and Awareness of Sexual and Reproductive Health Services in Relation to Their Gender and Religiosity
  • Jun 26, 2017
  • Journal of Religion and Health
  • Nancy Martin + 2 more

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between religiosity and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) knowledge and awareness of campus SRH services among college students on a racially and ethnically diverse college campus. The sample included 996 undergraduate students at a large public university in California. For women, there was a consistent pattern across religious affiliations of more frequent attenders reporting lower SRH knowledge than less frequent attenders. These findings suggest that higher rates of religious attendance among Catholic, Protestant, and Evangelical women pose a risk for lower SRH knowledge. The results suggest the need for SRH outreach and educational materials targeting men in general, who had lower levels of SRH knowledge and awareness of SRH services overall, and taking religiosity into account, particularly with regard to women.

  • Ali Eryılmaz

This study aims to investigate the relation between participation in religious activities and the subjective well-being of high school students. The study group involves 196 participants, 99 female and 97 male; all of the participants were adolescents attending high school in Eskisehir, Turkey, their ages varying from 14 to 16. The measurement scales used in this study included: Satisfaction with Life, Positive-Negative Affect, and Adolescents' Subjective Well-being Increasing Strategies. The Pearson correlation technique and content analysis method were employed. Though in low levels, quantitative findings show a significant relation between life satisfaction, positive affection, and participation in religious activities. However, no such significant relation could be found for negative affection and participation in religious activities. Qualitative findings show high school students have a better subjective well-being when involved in religious activities, ranging from praying alone to going to mosque on holy days, which helps them discharge religious duties, meets the need for building intimacy with someone, gives them sense of security, instills hope in them, fosters good manners in them, makes them feel rewarded, and helps them cope with stress. Keywords: High school students * Adolescents * Subjective well-being * Participating in religious activitiesIn the modern field of psychology, pathology-based approaches and positive approaches, suggest that cultural factors be taken into account in explaining human behavior (Kaslow, 1996). In consideration of particularly positive psychology, the importance of transferring ethnic, cultural, and religious factors providing positive contributions to the psychological development of high school students. As such, an investigation into the relation between the subjective well-being of high school students and performing their religious duties could make a distinguished contribution to the current literature.Subjective Well-being of High School Students and Strategies towards Increasing their Subjective Well-beingIn recent times, there has been a rise in scientific studies dealing with the subjective well-being of children, particularly the subjective well-being of high school students. As was the case with subjective well-being studies concerning adults, studies involving high school students have been examined based on three vital dimensions: positive affection, negative affection, and satisfaction with life (Diener, 1984; Eryilmaz, 2012).Related studies in the literature have been conducted based upon three significant dimensions, the first of which has looked into the relation between intra-individual features such as personality traits, intelligence, self-esteem, locus of control, and the subjective well-being of high school students (Huebner, 1991; Mcknight, Huebner, & Suldo, 2002). The second one examines the relation between socio-economic features such as age, gender, income, and the subjective well-being of high school students (Huebner, Drane, & Valois, 2000; Huebner, Suldo, Smith, & McKnight, 2004; Jozefiak, Larsson, & Wichstrom, 2009; Karatzias, Chouliara, Power, & Swanson, 2006; McCullough, Huebner, & Laughlin, 2002; Sarakauskiene & Bagdonas, 2010). The third one looks at the relation between variables such as academic contexts, familial relations, and peer relations experienced by high school students and their subjective well-being (Ash & Huebner, 2001; Joronen & Kurki, 2005; Hartup & Stevens, 1997; Park, 2004; Rask, Kurki, & Paavilainen, 2003; Suldo & Huebner, 2004). In addition, high school students' subjective well-being has been considered with respect to subjective well-being increasing (Eryilmaz, 2010, 2012).Tactics used by individuals to raise the level of subjective well-being are known as strategies adopted for enhancing the subjective well-being; this was first initiated by Fordyce (1977; 1983). …

Extra-Curricular Activities Improved Reproductive Health Knowledge of Ethnic Minority High School Students in Vietnam
  • Jun 1, 2019
  • Journal of Family & Reproductive Health
  • Mai Van Hung + 4 more

Objective: To assess the effectiveness of extra-curricular activities in improving reproductive health knowledge of ethnic minority students in mountainous areas in Vietnam. Materials and methods: The study was conducted on 400 ethnic minority students at Dien Bien Dong Ethnic Minority High School in Vietnam. The selected healthy students with a similar mix of study results and grades were divided into two groups: a control group had no the extra-curricular activities on reproductive health, and an experimental group participated extra-curricular activities on reproductive health. The extra-curricular activities were designed as a series of seminars on numerous reproductive health contents. The retention of reproductive health knowledge was then evaluated by a test containing multiple-choice and single-choice questions. Results: Results showed that the percentage of students who did not correctly understand puberty signs, ovulation time during menstrual cycle, contraceptive method use and sexually transmitted diseases in the control group ranged from 34.5% - 83.5%. Despite the fact that the ethnic minority high school students’ knowledge of reproductive health was poor, the percentage of students who fully understood puberty signs, ovulation time during menstrual cycle, contraceptive method use and sexually transmitted diseases significantly increased and reached at least 90% after attending extra-curricular activities on reproductive health (p < 0.05).Conclusion: The ethnic minority high school students’ knowledge of reproductive health was relatively poor. Extra-curricular activities markedly increased the knowledge of many reproductive health aspects. These findings suggest that it is necessary to improve the knowledge of reproductive health for ethnic minority high school students in mountainous areas in Vietnam, and that extra-curricular activities organized as seminars are effective and suitable to provide and retain students’ knowledge of reproductive health.

The impact of a growth mindset on high school students' learning subjective well-being: the serial mediation role of achievement motivation and grit.
  • Jul 17, 2024
  • Frontiers in psychology
  • Wei Zhao + 9 more

The learning subjective well-being of high school students has significant value for their academic achievement and future life development. A growth mindset is one of the key factors affecting the learning subjective well-being of high school students. However, research on the mechanism by which a growth mindset affects learning subjective well-being is still relatively limited. Therefore, the study aims to investigate the impact of a growth mindset on the learning subjective well-being of high school students, as well as the role that achievement motivation and grit play as serial mediators in this relationship. This study employed a convenience sampling method to select 708 high school students from Chinese public high schools as participants. The research utilized the Growth Mindset Scale, Achievement Motivation Scale, Grit Scale, and the Learning Subjective Well-being Questionnaire for High School Students to collect data. All data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0, employing Model 6 from Hayes' SPSS PROCESS macro to test the serial mediation model. Our results found that (1) high school students' growth mindset positively predicted their learning subjective well-being. (2) Achievement motivation played a mediating role between a growth mindset and learning subjective well-being among high school students. (3) Grit acted as a mediator between learning subjective well-being and growth mindset among high school students. (4) Achievement motivation and grit served as serial mediators between a growth mindset and learning subjective well-being among high school students. A growth mindset can influence the learning subjective well-being of high school students through achievement motivation and grit. Educators can enhance the learning subjective well-being of high school students by implementing intervention strategies that foster a growth mindset, achievement motivation, and grit.

  • Gufron Wahyudi + 1 more

Reproductive health knowledge is a critical aspect of adolescents' overall well-being, and its effective promotion plays a pivotal role in ensuring their long-term health and decision-making. In recent years, the utilization of video-based health education has gained popularity as a means of delivering information to this demographic. However, it was imperative to investigate the extent to which this innovative approach truly influences adolescents' knowledge. This study employed a quasi-experimental two-group pretest-posttest design and involved a total of 34 respondents who were selected through a comprehensive total sampling technique. The primary objective was to evaluate the impact of video-based health education on adolescents' knowledge of reproductive health. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Mann-Whitney Test and the Wilcoxon Test, revealing a statistically significant improvement in reproductive health knowledge among the participants, as indicated by a p-value of 0.000, which was less than the significance level of 0.05. These findings emphasized the effectiveness of video-based health education as a powerful tool in enhancing adolescents' comprehension of reproductive health matters. It underscores the importance of integrating video-based education into comprehensive health promotion strategies targeted at adolescents, as it has the potential to significantly contribute to their overall health awareness and decision-making capabilities.
