Abstract
In the power system, phase angles of bus voltages are significant as the flow of real power in the transmission network is almost proportional to the sine of the phase differences of sending and receiving end bus voltages. This chapter proposes a technique to place a phasor measurement unit (PMU) at the optimal location for the performance improvement of the state estimation algorithm to enhance the stability of the power system. It utilizes the integer linear programming technique for optimally placing the PMUs to enhance the conventional state estimation algorithm. The IEEE 14-bus benchmark system is used as a base case and the 21-bus Southern region Ethiopian power system network is modeled in detail. A comparative analysis of conventional and improved state estimation techniques is performed in terms of a mean square error reduction.
