Enhancing Historical Understanding through Local Wisdom Based Learning: A Case Study in Senior High Schools
In the growing concern over students’ detachment from historical content and the weakening of cultural identity, contextualizing history education through local wisdom emerges as a pedagogical imperative. This study explores how integrating local wisdom into history education can enhance student engagement, historical comprehension, and emotional connection to the subject at SMA N Kota Pontianak. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through classroom observations, teacher interviews, and student reflections. The results demonstrate that local wisdom-based learning enriches historical understanding by linking curriculum content to students’ cultural heritage through folklore, oral traditions, and community narratives. Students showed increased motivation, active participation, and a stronger emotional bond with historical topics, reinforcing their cultural pride and sense of identity. While aligning with existing research on contextual learning, this study offers a novel contribution by examining the affective dimension of learning and its implementation in a multicultural, local Indonesian context. It highlights the strategic role of teachers in adapting local narratives into history lessons. It underscores the pedagogical value of local wisdom for fostering critical thinking, cultural awareness, and identity-based meaning-making. Despite challenges such as limited teaching resources and diverse interpretations of local traditions, the study concludes that local wisdom-based learning represents a powerful approach to revitalizing history education. It recommends that curriculum developers and educators systematically integrate local wisdom to promote more relevant, reflective, and inclusive learning experiences.

Background - Early childhood education based on local wisdom is important to develop children’s potential holistically, nurture various aspects of their development, preserve cultural heritage, strengthen national identity, and at the same time make education more contextual and meaningful. Research Urgency - The urgency of this research lies in the need to preserve local wisdom in early childhood education amid the rapid influence of globalization. Current practices often emphasize academic achievement while neglecting cultural values and contextual learning. Without immediate efforts, there is a risk that younger generations will lose connection to their cultural identity. This study is therefore crucial to provide a holistic learning model that not only fosters children’s development but also strengthens cultural identity and ensures meaningful, context-based education. Research Objectives - This study aims to analyze the implementation of early childhood education based on local wisdom in PAUD Terpadu Citra Bakti and to formulate recommendations for a contextual and culturally responsive learning model that supports the holistic development of young children. Research Method - The research employed a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving teachers, children, and parents. The data analysis technique used Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, which consists of data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Research Findings - The findings reveal that the implementation of local wisdom-based learning has a positive impact on children. These positive impacts include introducing and familiarizing children with cultural values from an early age, enhancing active participation in learning activities, utilizing local culture as a contextual learning resource, and fostering the development of children’s abilities through various learning activities. Research Conclusion – The implementation of local wisdom-based learning in PAUD Terpadu Citra Bakti has proven to be an effective means of introducing, instilling, and preserving culture from an early age. Thus, local wisdom-based learning not only strengthens children’s cultural identity but also stimulates the development of cognitive, socio-emotional, language, and motor skills. Research Novelty/Contribution - The novelty of this research lies in its analysis of early childhood education practices that genuinely integrate local wisdom into the teaching and learning process. Rather than merely describing cultural values, this study examines how local wisdom is utilized as learning resources, teaching methods, and a means of fostering children’s holistic development. Thus, the research demonstrates that local wisdom can serve as a pedagogical approach that is relevant, contextual, and meaningful for early childhood education.

Local wisdom-based learning model is motivated by global environmental crisis. Local wisdom has proven its significance in achieving a harmonious relationship between human and nature. This research aims to identify the impact of local wisdom-based learning on students’ understanding on the land ethic. This study is conducted using the experimental method with factorial designs. Subjects involved in this study are Grade XI social students, composed of three experimental groups. The research variables are local wisdom-based learning model as the free variable and the land ethic understanding as the bound variable. The research instruments consist of observation, assignments, tests, and performances. The data are analyzed statistically. The results show (1) there is a difference of the land ethic understanding between before and after applying local wisdom-based learning on experimental group 1, 2, and 3; and (2) there is no significant change on the land ethic understanding between experimental group 1, 2, and 3. It is implied that local wisdom-based learning influences the land ethic comprehension.

This study is motivated by the declining understanding of Sundanese traditional culture among elementary school students in West Java, caused by globalization and the suboptimal implementation of local wisdom-based learning in schools. The research aims to analyze the influence of local wisdom-based learning on the preservation of traditional culture using a quasi-experimental method with a pretest-posttest nonequivalent control group design. The study involved 50 fourth-grade students randomly divided into two groups: an experimental group of 25 students and a control group of 25 students from one elementary school in Bandung City. Data were collected through cultural knowledge tests, attitude assessments, and observation sheets during three sessions of integrated local wisdom-based learning (e.g., folktales, traditional games, Sundanese arts). The data were then analyzed using t-tests and N-gain analysis. The results of the study showed that there was a significant increase in the experimental group in the knowledge test, with an N-gain of 0.66 or 66% in the moderate category, an increase in attitude assessment of 26%, and an increase in skill observation results of 29%. The main findings prove that local wisdom-based learning is effective in preserving traditional culture while improving student learning outcomes. The study concludes that integrating local content into the elementary curriculum through the development of contextual modules, teacher training, and collaboration with cultural communities is essential. The implications of this research provide empirical evidence for strengthening character education based on local wisdom and formulating educational policies oriented toward cultural preservation in West Java.

The era of globalization requires every individual to possess scientific argumentation skills. However, in reality, many people have yet to apply approaches that emphasize scientific argumentation. One effective way to foster scientific argumentation skills is through learning that incorporates local wisdom. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of obtaining an overview of whether students show a tendency toward local wisdom-based learning in physics as a means to enhance scientific argumentation skills. This research employs a quantitative descriptive method. The data collection techniques used include questionnaires supported by interviews. The instruments utilized are a questionnaire sheet and an interview sheet. The data obtained were analyzed quantitatively and descriptively using a Likert scale. The results indicate that students perceive the need for learning that is not only focused on theoretical content but also integrates local values as a medium for developing critical thinking and scientific argumentation skills. Hence, it can be concluded that students recognize the importance of local wisdom-based learning as a potential approach to support the development of scientific argumentation skills. Local wisdom provides relevant context in physics learning. Thus, local wisdom-based learning is considered a meaningful approach to strengthen scientific argumentation skills and conceptual understanding in physics.

Today science learning is not only for understanding science but also for explaining phenomena, solving relevant problems, and even developing the economy and its welfare (sustainable development). To achieve this goal, local wisdom-based learning is very strategic as a productive context in learning science, becoming an interception between science and the social dimension. Using a qualitative content analysis approach supported by the literature and the results of our previous studies, we conducted an in-depth study of a framework of local wisdom-based learning. The results show that local wisdom can be considered a socio-scientific issue, as it has an identical conceptual framework in learning. To study science, especially for sustainable development goals (SDGs), students need connections with scientific ideas and social concerns of local wisdom. IDEA Scaffolding principles can help students learn to connect with the locals’ wisdom. Keywords: connecting students, local wisdom, sustainable development goals, a conceptual framework
