Abstract

The present mixed method study investigated the effects of an integrated curriculum which included core creativity and meditation training in graduate level writing students. Participants who completed a creative writing course (n = 7) demonstrated a significant increase in creativity overall, and in particular a significant increase in originality and flexibility of creative ideas in verbal expression. There was a significant increase in aspects of working memory, divided attention and positive affect, as well as a tendency to be less judgemental. Introspective knowledge was a central feature of the qualitative findings in this study. The analysis revealed the discernment of seven stages of the creative process. Interdependence- sense of community and belonging enhanced students’ creativity. This study reveals that creativity can be learned.
