Abstract

Mineral oil enhanced production of interferon in vitro by murine peritoneal leukocytes when the latter were challenged with encephalomyocarditis virus (EMC). Serum interferon titers were significantly elevated in those animals that were infected with EMC and had received an intraperitoneal injection of mineral oil. In experimental EMC infections in vivo, a single intraperitoneal injection of mineral oil resulted in a marked decrease in mortality in those animals receiving the injection.
