Abstract
Effects of diamines, polyamines, and other basic amino acids on the growth of lettuce hypocotyls were investigated. Putrescine, cadaverine and agmatine enhanced the hypocotyl growth in the presence of gibberellin, while spermidine and spermine were non-effective. Arginine and ornithine, which may be precursors of putrescine, had similar effect. While the growth inhibition due to arcaine (1,4-diguanidinobutane), which is a agmatine iminohydrolase inhibitor, was recovered by agmatine, cadaverine, putrescine, and spermidine, putrescine most effectively recovered its growth-enhancing effect.
