Abstract
Ne and Ar field ion (FI) imaging conditions for clean and epitaxially gold-covered Rh(111) tips have been studied. A significant decrease of the image voltages has been observed for various thicknesses of the Au films. This is caused by different enhancements of local fields in the vicinity of protruding Au atoms compared to Rh due to their different electronic structure. The results are in accord with the theoretical trend recently predicted in the self-consistent calculations of local-field distribution in the vicinity of protruding surface atoms of different chemical nature. The assumption of an exchange type collision-induced field ionization mechanism is in agreement with presented data.
