Abstract

The United States is undergoing significant shifts in birth rates and immigration, changing the population of PreK‐12 learners. The numbers of Hispanic and Asian English learners (ELs) are increasing. This trend and its continuity will be described and important directions highlighted. Future directions will then be discussed on how best to serve ELs and prepare educators for increased numbers of ELs through diverse educator recruitment, diversity training, culturally congruent/responsive/relevant pedagogy, and academic and language instruction. How these trends will modify general educators’ knowledge, performance and dispositional competencies in areas such as content‐based instruction, language knowledge, and second language acquisition principles will also be addressed. Models of teaching may be modified in light of the changing student population to include more dual‐language immersion programs in the languages of Hispanic and Asian learners.
