Abstract

This introductory chapter provides a survey of the history and current situation of English as a medium of instruction and research production in Moroccan higher education. It opens with a historical account of the diplomatic relations between Morocco and the English-speaking world. English made its entry into the Moroccan university in the 1960s, and its influence has grown apace especially in the era of globalization. The second part of the chapter outlines a series of challenges facing the departments of English in Moroccan higher education institutions. Finally, we preview the sixteen chapters in this volume, which consists of extensive and empirical studies by experienced Moroccan faculty members.
