Abstract

An introduction to some fascinating but neglected features of the English landscape is provided by Maurice W. Beresford, History on the Ground , which describes six journeys into the history of fields, villages, deserted villages, medieval towns, parks and parish boundaries. The British Association handbooks contain much valuable information on the historical geography of the regions in which the annual meetings of the Association are held, and give fuller pictures of the industrial development of the cities than are available elsewhere. The most important advances in historical geography during the past fifteen years have appeared in professional journals, notably in the Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers. Historians have made notable contributions to the study of historical geography in two directions: in reconstructing the geography of past periods and in tracing the origins and development of particular features in the landscape.
