Abstract

ABSTRACT FIELD studies were made at 10 cottonseed oil mills. Measurements of dust in the working environment as well as in the cottonseed were taken to evaluate existing controls in relation to compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations. Designers and suppliers of cottonseed oil mill equipment were contacted to ascertain any future developments in machine design that could lower dust levels in the future. Some differences in dust concentrations of oil mills pro-cessing picked versus stripped cotton were noted. Several design concepts for future mills and mill machinery could have impact toward lowering dust levels in the working environment and are discussed.
