Abstract

ABSTRACT A corpus of 65 articles from the years 2016–2021 was reviewed in order to describe and analyze current representations of children’s museums in the scholarly literature. Themes discussed are Learning (44 articles); Social Interaction (33 articles); Physical Environment (20 articles); Mission, Goals, Philosophy (17 articles); Inclusiveness, Accessibility, Anti-bias (15 articles); Staff (13 articles); Play (13 articles); Community Engagement (9 articles); and Field Trips (5 articles). Theoretical orientations, child ages, author disciplinary affiliations, and research country are also discussed. Recommendations based on gaps identified in the literature include more dialogue between the scholarly literature and the gray literature, a broader theoretical and disciplinary base, more research on socioemotional development, more qualitative research, and more comparative and global approaches.
