Energy-environmental efficiency of clean energy in China: Integrated analysis with regional green growth

Green growth has become an increasingly important paradigm for sustainable economic growth, resource development, and environmental protection. As the main focus in energy led green growth is a move away from fossil energy to clean energy, sustainable green growth resource development needs to measure both energy and environmental efficiencies. As the largest global energy consumer and carbon emitter, China has had to deal with serious energy and environmental issues in recent years, with its regional green growth performances being poorly assessed. Therefore, green growth clean energy-environmental efficiency assessments were examined in this paper, for which an integrated principal component analysis-data envelopment analysis based analysis approach was developed. It was found that while China's green growth has had a significant increasing trend in recent years, overall it was still at a low level, with the imbalances in China's regional economic development being reflected in its green growth. However, the excellent development and utilization of clean energy in most regions have significantly promoted a continuous improvement in China's green growth and the move toward sustainable resource development and utilization is contributing to long-term green growth. Green growth has also placed new demands on sustainable resource development in China. Therefore, underdeveloped regions that have sustainable resource endowments need to develop industrial systems that have clean energy as the main axis, and developed regions need to develop high-end industries that have low energy consumption and encourage mutual support systems between regions to ensure optimal sustainable resource, green growth development patterns.

The Impact of Community Participation in Sustainable Learning Resource Development: A Case of Bangkok, Thailand

This study investigates the impact of community participation in sustainable learning resource development through the mediating effect of awareness in Bangkok, Thailand. The determinants of community participation comprise three levels: top-level participation, middle-level participation, and bottom-level participation. The mediator is awareness, and the outcome is sustainable learning resource development. This study employed convenience sampling, drawing on 478 participants responsible for promoting knowledge and engaging resources. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) v. 29 was used for descriptive analysis, and ADANCO v. 2.3.2 was used to test the hypotheses. The partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) reveals that bottom-level participation has the most significant influence on sustainable development, followed by middle-level and top-level participation by adopting awareness serving as a mediating factor. The conclusion of this study is to focus on community sustainable learning resource development, particularly through bottom-level participation. A strategic planner should utilize technology to enhance public relations and develop community learning resources, thereby improving sustainable development. Moreover, it is suggested that the community members, schools, and educational institutions hold meetings to find ways to build community sustainable learning resource development that could improve sustainability in social, economic, and environmental settings. The recommendation for further studies should be to conduct qualitative interviews for in-depth insights.

在构建我国野生动物资源可持续发展指标体系、采用熵值法确定各指标权重的基础上,研究了野生动物及栖息地的保护与资源经济协调发展情况,分析了野生动物资源可持续发展的总体运行趋势。结果表明:(1)2001-2009年,我国野生动物及栖息地保护综合指数、资源经济综合指数和社会进步综合指数总体呈上升趋势。(2)2001-2005年、2007-2009年,野生动物及栖息地保护与资源经济的协调发展度值在0.14-0.35之间,整体协调发展水平较低,属于失调衰退类;2006年的协调发展度值为0.45,处于保护与利用协调发展的过渡阶段。(3)野生动物资源可持续发展水平呈上升趋势,但总体水平不高,2001-2005年的可持续发展综合指数在0.15-0.31之间,属于传统较落后的发展阶段,2007、2008年的可持续发展综合指数分别为0.45和0.47,属于传统较落后的发展阶段;2006年、2009年的可持续发展综合指数分别为0.55和0.56,实现了由传统发展向可持续发展的过渡。;To achieve sustainable development of wildlife resources, the protection of wildlife and maintenance of ecological balance has become one of the key goals in China. For the protection of wildlife resources, it is necessary to quantitatively study the trend in sustainable development of these wildlife resources. Analysis of the general trend of sustainable development, which is achieved by sustainable development wildlife resources, the protection of wildlife resources and habitat, and ecological balance, has important theoretical meaning as well as practical significance. <br> In this paper, we established a system of wildlife sustainable evaluation indicators. We also used the entropy method to determine the weight of each index, examined the protection of wildlife resources and development of harmonious resource use, and analyzed the overall tendency of sustainable development of wildlife resources. The results show that: (1) From 2001-2009 in China there was an upward trend in the wildlife and habitat protection index, resource economic comprehensive index, and social progress index. (2) The degree of coordination between wildlife and environmental protection and comprehensive resource economics was 0.14-0.35 in 2001-2005 and 2007-2009. Also, the overall coordination development was at a relatively low level, which belonged to the class of disorders of recession. The degree value was 0.45 in 2006, which belonged to the coordination development in the transition phase. (3) Although the wildlife resource sustainable development level was increasing, the overall level was low. The comprehensive index was between 0.15-0.31 from 2001-2005, and between 0.45-0.47 from 2007-2008, which belonged to the traditional backward stage of development. The integrated index was 0.55 in 2006 and 0.56 in 2009, which was achieved by the transition from traditional development to sustainable development. <br> Based on the actual situation of China's wildlife protection, combining the related data analysis affects sustainable development of wildlife resources for the following reasons: (1) negative effects on wildlife and habitat protection; (2) need for more comprehensive wildlife advocacy; (3) the overall level of wildlife breeding industry needs to advance; (4) the wildlife resource industry level needs to be further improved; (5) wildlife resources for the sustainable development of macroeconomics must be regulated and controlled. On this basis we propose the following four methods to promote the sustainable development of wildlife resources in China: (1) Further strengthen the protection of wildlife and habitats. This can be done by developing teams of professional staff to work in wildlife protection, improving staff welfare, establishing community co-management systems, and galvanizing the enthusiasm of residents for the protection of wildlife. (2) Conduct public campaigns for the science behind wildlife conservation. Develop new strategies for wildlife protection and new methods of publicity aimed at educating the public on the importance of reducing their use of wildlife resources. (3) Increasing scientific research on wildlife breeding to overcome current technical barriers. Optimization of industrial structure of wildlife resources to improve the quality of wildlife as a product. (4) Further improve laws and regulations governing wildlife resources, and promote development of a legal system to oversee the resource utilization industry.

Mineral resources are non-renewable and serve as a crucial energy guarantee supporting the development of human economy and society. Promoting the sustainable development and utilization of mineral resources through scientific and effective economic decision-making while also considering ecological and environmental protection has become a global consensus. In recent years, the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data technologies has driven the deep transformation of various industries and provided more efficient management tools for economic decision-making and environmental management in the sustainable development of mineral resources. This paper briefly elaborates on the background and significance of the study, clarifies the important roles played by AI and big data technologies in the sustainable development of mineral resources, and discusses their specific application scenarios and implementation strategies with economic decision-making and environmental management as examples. The aim is to further promote the transformation and upgrading of the mining industry, improve production efficiency, and achieve green, low-carbon, and sustainable development.

Pandemic COVID-19 had massive impact on global economics including agro-industrial companies listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange. Those companies faced financial distress. Trying to maintain their profit generating or loss in financial performance. However, the demand from stakeholders to implement sustainability still existed regarding investment on human resources. This study aimed to analyse the sustainable human resources development practices in listed agro-industrial companies by identifying and mapping the vision and mission, the implementation of human resource development, and financial commitments issued by Indonesian agro-industrial companies in developing human resources specifically for a pandemic phenomenon. This study used qualitative method by employing exploration approach and document analysis on sustainability report. The result showed that the Indonesian agro-industrial companies still showed the commitment on sustainable human resources development which reflected on their sustainable vision and mission. Those companies still showed the sustainable human resource development in 2020 by conducting training and certification as an investment for prospective opportunity in global competitive business. The financial commitment reflected in cost allocation for those needs. COVID-19 had impact for financial performance indeed. However, financial instability had not been an obstacle for those companies to develop their human resources. COVID-19 needed digital technology adaptation and employee needed to be trained and certified. Future

This paper aimed at studying the effect of traditional knowledge system in sustainable development and management of natural resources in Meru community. The study was guided by the following questions: What is the role of indigenous system in the protection and conservation of natural resources in Meru community? What is the role of integrated environmental management frame work in the sustainable development and management of natural resources in Meru community? What is the relationship between participatory decision making, policy maker’s implementation and natural resources users in Meru community? The research was conducted in Meru and Tharaka Nithi Counties and through purposeful sampling had two case studies from each county in Meru community. Data was collected using guided interviews and semi structured questions. The data was collected through a focus group discussion, documents and audio-visual materials. The study reviewed the literature to understand the effect of traditional knowledge system in sustainable development and management of natural resources in Meru community. Theoretical insights and empirical findings from the studies suggest that despite the generalized worldwide trend of Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) erosion, substantial pockets of TEK persist in both developing and developed countries. The findings also reinforce previous hypotheses pointing at the importance of TEK systems as reservoirs of experiential knowledge that can provide important insights for the design of adaptation and mitigation strategies to cope with global environmental change in the management of natural resources. Recognition of endogenous management of Indigenous knowledge becomes an enhancing solution to the seemingly mega challenges of community development. Indigenous knowledge is a more secure foundation for sustainable solutions to challenges in developmental issues in communities and in Africa. Advanced technology in Indigenous knowledge (IK) usage and preservation empowers users to improve on pre-existing solutions to a problem, achieve a goal, and most of all improve on the standards of living. The rise and fall of green growth: Korea's energy sector experiment and its lessons for sustainable energy policy

The idea of “green growth” has received international attention for more than a decade as a promising solution to a distinctly modern problem: a century of unparalleled increases in wealth based on equally unparalleled innovations in energy technology accompanied by global environmental threats such as climate change and persistent socioeconomic inequality. The green growth premise is that this problem can be solved without surrendering continued economic growth by a redirection of human effort to invent green energy technology, green energy markets, and green energy choice. Proponents have argued that green‐energy based economic growth represents a paradigm shift bringing forth sustainable and equitable relations between environment, economy, and society. The paper reviews a decade of green energy growth strategies and practices. The Korean Green Growth Initiative (KGGI) is investigated as a case study of green energy growth operationalization. Korea’s experiment was widely hailed by international bodies such as The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) for its bold attempt at paradigm shift, with the hope that, if it succeeded, countries currently on the periphery of modern development would be able to overcome conditions of poverty, environmental degradation, and political dependency. But our analysis of the Korean case questions the idea and ideology of green energy growth, demonstrating instead that KGGI was quickly coopted by the paradigm it was supposed to supplant. Geoscience and sustainable catchment and resource management: the Ben Chifley Catchment case study

This article demonstrates a key role that geoscience and geoscientists could be playing in promoting sustainable catchment and resource management. A new geoscience-based approach supported by a landscape-genesis (LG) model was employed to provide an alternative approach for integrated catchment management and sustainable resource use and development. The Ben Chifley Catchment case study is used to explain the application of the approach and the landscape-genesis model. The study confirmed that lithological composition, tectonic and diagenetic processes, and landform were critical factors in determining the intrinsic properties and variation in soil type, land use, land capability, steepness of terrain, erosion, and resource degradation within the catchment. The landscape-genesis model, which is based on the geological and geomorphic genesis of the landscape, proved to be a powerful tool to predict the inherent carrying capacity and resilience of the various biophysical systems in the catchment. Although this approach is still in its infancy, its application has demonstrated that it has a strong potential in terms of undertaking sound integrated assessment, predicting potential resource degradation under different land uses, and developing sound management practices and solutions to advance the goal of ecological sustainability.

Sustainable resource development in Asia: challenges and opportunities

This chapter examines the role that mineral resources and sustainable mining may play in Asia’s future growth and development. Across Asia, several big and small nations are endowed with rich deposits of valuable metals and minerals. While for some of these nations, mining has remained a long-term economic activity, for other smaller nations, minerals development is slowly but surely catching momentum. This chapter has a two fold purpose: firstly, it reflects on the experiences of other resource-rich regions in the world and in doing so, suggests how resource development can provide long-term opportunities to enhance the socio-economic status of Asia’s developing regions. Secondly, it acknowledges the transformational nature of mining from a socio-cultural and ecological standpoint. A key objective of this chapter, therefore, is to understand how Asia’s current and future policymakers might best optimize opportunities provided by mining without succumbing to the many potential challenges – social, environmental, institutional as well as economic – inherent to resource development. The chapter is organized in six parts. The following section ‘Sustainable Resource Development: Principles and Practice’ provides a theoretical underpinning of the key principles and characteristics identified with sustainable resource development. The section ‘Resource Development in Asia: An Intellectual Review’ reviews the state of mining in Asia and identifies the region’s vital resource sector players.

Regional distribution and sustainable development strategy of mineral resources in China

This paper summarizes the distribution and production layout of the major mineral resources in China, including coal, iron ore, copper and bauxite, from a national perspective. It also identifies the incompatibility between the mineral resources distribution and regional economic development. Significant issues with China’s mineral resource industry cause challenges for the sustainable development of both the mining industry and the national socio-economy. The sustainability of regional mineral resources and the environmental pollution by mining in the western China were also analyzed. Results show that the distribution of China’s mineral resources is misaligned with its regional layout of economic development. China’s mineral resources have been over-exploited, and the mineral resources production in the eastern China is unsustainable. The continuously expanding production of mineral resources in the western China has heavily endangered the ecological environment. We propose strategies to boost the sustainable development of mineral resources, including measures to accelerate economic development and enhance the sustainability of domestic mineral resources. We also offer suggestions for scientifically planning the mineral resource prospecting and exploitation and regional economic layout, as well as for proactively undertaking industry transfer in the eastern China and raising the environmental benchmark requirements for the mineral industry in the central and western China.

The Exploration of a Causal Mechanism for Corporate Environmental Performance in Hydropower Engineering Enterprises: Evidence from China and the United States

Sustainable resource and environmental development has become a crucial scientific issue that urgently needs to be addressed. Hence, the issue of green social responsibility has undergone profound exploration. Hydropower engineering, as a significant clean energy source, exhibits promising prospects for fulfilling green social responsibilities. This article analyzed the causal mechanism and behavioral evolution of green social responsibility fulfillment in hydropower between China and the United States by employing event causality extraction, content analysis, and system dynamics as research methodologies. This study revealed a causal relationship between the fulfillment of green social responsibilities in hydropower projects and ethical governance, green development, and risk response. Through the content analysis of the causal relationships, it was found that China expressed a strong emotional inclination toward green development, whereas the United States showed positive values in terms of risk response. Through the simulation of system dynamics, this study found that the causal driving mechanisms of the two countries were generally favorable at different dimensional levels. Among them, under endogenous driving forces, the promoting effect of ethical governance and green development by risk response was more obvious. Under basic driving forces, green development has the most significant driving effect on the fulfillment of green social responsibilities in both countries.

This article explores the level of women's understanding of sustainable development in Gqebera Township, Port Elizabeth, South Africa. It further examines the challenges and opportunities for sustainable human resource development (HRD) in the Sub-Saharan region. Sub-Saharan Africa is facing numerous challenges, including poverty, inequality, HIV and AIDS and high unemployment. All these factors are important to consider when planning HRD policies and strategies in the region. Sustainable development is a worldwide aim and on the agenda of many countries on the African continent. The conditions under which women in Sub-Saharan Africa have been trying to participate in the development process in the past have often prevented them from fully developing their capacity to take part in the work towards sustainable development.

Transport figures prominently on green growth agendas. The reason is twofold. First, transport has major environmental impacts in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, local air emissions and noise. And managing congestion more effectively is part of the broader agenda for more sustainable development and better use of resources invested in infrastructure. Second, a large part of public expenditure to stimulate green growth is directed at transport sector industries. This concerns most notably alternative vehicles, and particularly electric cars, a key part of strategies to decarbonise transport. Several countries also financed car scrapping and replacement schemes as a short term response to the 2008 financial crisis. The primary goal here was counter-cyclical stimulus for the car manufacturing industry with, in most cases, a secondary goal of reducing CO2 emissions and fuel consumption through fleet renewal. Some governments also include investment in high speed rail as a central element of longer term green growth policies, aiming at a shift in passenger traffic from cars and short haul aviation to rail.
