Abstract
This paper explores the relationship between electricity consumption, petroleum consumption and economic growth in Vietnam. The Cobb-Douglas production is used over the period of 1980–2014. We have applied the ARDL bounds testing approach and found that cointegration exists among the included variables. Further, the Granger causality test affirms that there is one-way causality between electricity consumption, petroleum consumption and economic growth. The empirical results provide a strong statistical evidence that electricity consumption has a positive impact on the economic growth of Vietnam both in the short-term and long-term. This study suggests that policy-makers should establish concrete plans to increase investment in the electricity sector, and explore new sources of energy to achieve sustainable economic development for the long-run.
