Abstract
Endoscopic ultrasound has revolutionized the evaluation of submucosal lesions. It is the most accurate, minimally invasive modality for diagnosing submucosal lesions. Computed tomography scan and abdominal ultrasound do not provide sufficient resolution to predict the etiology of these lesions and may miss small lesions. Lesions can be characterized based on the following criteria: layer of origin, size, echogenicity, and margins. This helps in the treatment protocol selected, which include endomucosal resection, surgery, or conservative management (serial follow ups). This article discusses the role of endoscopic ultrasound in the evaluation of submucosal lesions based solely on ultrasound imaging characteristics.
