Abstract

SUMMARY Endoscopy of nasal passages, ethmoidal sinus, nasopharynx, guttural pouches, larynx, trachea, esophagus, stomach and, in some animals, the first portion of the duodenum, was performed in each of 24 Spanish donkeys. Age and body weight ranged from six months to 24 years and 94 to 360 kg, respectively. The endoscopic appearance of normal anatomic structures of the respiratory and digestive tracts was described. Specific findings in Spanish donkeys were: presence of narrow nasal passages; different conformation of the guttural flaps, pharyngeal recess, epiglottic apex and angulation of the airway; pigmentation of some portions of the larynx and esophagus; and, finally, a possible stomach emptying delay. Some incidental findings were: dilation of the maxillary vein and aberrant tortuous vascular pattern inside the guttural pouches, a dorsal displacement of the soft palate, two subepiglottic cysts in the larynx and gastric erosions in the stomach of some animals.
