Abstract

BackgroundThe limitations of endodontic procedures in childhood and adolescence arise from general and special aspects at this age. The preservation of primary teeth during the pre-school age could be challenging due to the facts that these procedures are usually compliance related procedures and due to the dental physiological changes happening during the early mixed dentition phase, in the late mixed dentition stage and after the full development of dentition some technical (local) problems start to manifest especially in nonvital permanent teeth with incompletely formed roots.RecommendationIn particular cases the clinical indications along with individual tooth situations should be balanced, whether or not the endodontic procedure is reasonable in terms of cost-effect and associated risks for the patient. Some considerations should be taken during treatment planning; primary teeth should have a transitional character type of treatment, as for permanent teeth a long term prognosis should be taken in account. At selected clinical examples such limitations should be identified.
