Encountering Typography through the Tactility of Non‐Digital Tools in the Age of Screens
Abstract The influence of digital technology on design is undeniable, shaping both the practice and pedagogy of typography. While digital tools have expanded typographic possibilities, they have also made it more challenging to cultivate sensitivity to type's form, use and historical significance. Design educators continue to grapple with the implications of increasing dependence on digital technologies, particularly in typography, where expertise has traditionally been shaped by both human reading habits and technological advancements. Despite typography's central role in graphic design education, there remains limited literature on how different tools influence learning outcomes. This paper presents a case study of a project in which students exclusively use basic drawing and painting tools to achieve an unmediated design experience, rather than relying on digital simulation. The study also compares hand‐drawn typography with digital typesetting in InDesign, exploring the cognitive and perceptual differences between these approaches. Using surveys, semi‐structured interviews and direct observations, this research examines how different methods impact students' attention to typographic detail, their appreciation for craftsmanship and their understanding of typography's spatial and material dimensions.

In Ghana, Graphic Design is regarded as one of the contemporary arts that was introduced in the Gold Coast by the British (The colonial administration) and European merchants in the 17th Century. Since then, the art has gone through series of metamorphosis in various aspects till date. However, empirical evidence indicates that the developmental patterns of the art in Ghana has not been documented comprehensively. Using qualitative research approaches such as historical research method, interviews, document review, narrative and inductive analysis, this paper sought to conduct a comprehensive research into the local Graphic Design industry to gather pieces of fragmented documented and oral information from relevant stake holders who were purposively selected from different parts of Ghana based on their professional memory on industrial practice and Graphic Design education in Ghana, to reconstruct the history of the art for posterity. The study revealed that, commercial press printing and newspaper advertising were introduced in the Gold Coast first before outdoor advertising and desktop publishing. Also, colonisation, successive government policies, technological inventions in the western countries, and developments in computer technologies have contributed immensely to the development of Graphic Design practice and education in Ghana from the 17th Century to date.

The aim of the article. The paper outlines the current state of scientific research in the field of marketing and the priority trends of its development based on the bibliometric analysis of a domestic scientific journal “Marketing and digital technologies” dedicated to modern marketing research related to digitalization processes. The results of the analyses. The journal has a pronounced thematic orientation and is characterized by a high level of scientific research, which is confirmed by the scientific qualifications of researchers, the involvement of publications by foreign scientists, and the growing ranking of article citations according to Google Scholar. Overall, this makes it possible to identify the Journal’s publications as a relevant information base for outlining modern directions of marketing research in Ukraine. According to the results of the analysis of the articles, it has been determined that domestic research on changes in marketing under the influence of digital technologies and the Internet is gradually developing and differs in a rather wide range of research: from theoretical foundations to specific narrowly focused issues. Based on the systematization of the content of the journal articles, the main thematic areas of research have been highlighted and the latest current trends have been identified. A significant part of publications is devoted to the application of digital marketing tools and technologies in marketing communications (promotion). At the same time, researchers pay the greatest attention to various aspects of marketing in social networks (SMM - Social Media Marketing) both in terms of studying its effectiveness, main indicators, and individual types of activities or markets, and certain social networks, for example, Facebook, and Instagram. Recent trends include an increase in the number of publications on marketing analytics (the main number of publications has been observed in 2021). In particular, the issues of using artificial intelligence in marketing analysis, CRM systems, and metrics in digital marketing are being investigated. Review articles on modern trends in marketing development are also a topical area. Quite significant publication activity is observed in the following directions: a comprehensive market study in the marketing system, including Marketing research; business models, digital economy; other areas of research in marketing and general economic issues. A certain "dispersion" of domestic scientific intelligence in the field of marketing and their general nature is partially evidenced by the analysis of the frequency of keywords usage in publications by year and the ranking of the most cited articles of the Journal in Google Scholar. Conclusions and perspectives for further research. Therefore, the current state of domestic scientific developments has been characterized as being in the formative stage. The research of marketing communications under the influence of digital technologies, as well as the gradual growth of the interest of scientists in marketing analytics, have been defined as topical directions. Trends in the development of marketing research are seen in the further development of the possibilities of using digital technologies and the changes they cause in both the theoretical and practical foundations of marketing activity. For instance, in our opinion, the issue of the management aspect under the transformation conditions of the enterprises’ marketing activities remains insufficiently studied.

<p class="Abstract">The role of creativity in graphic design education has been a central aspect of graphic design education. The psychological component of creativity and its role in graphic design education has not been given much importance. The present research would attempt to study ‘creativity in graphic design education from psychological perspectives’. A thorough review of literature would be conducted on graphic design education, creativity and its psychological aspects. Creativity is commonly defined as a ‘problem solving’ feature in design education. Students of graphic design have to involve themselves in the identification of cultural and social elements. Instruction in the field of graphic design must be aimed at enhancing the creative abilities of the student. The notion that creativity is a cultural production is strengthened by the problem solving methods employed in all cultures. Most cultures regard creativity as a process which leads to the creation of something new. Based on this idea, a cross-cultural research was conducted to explore the concept of creativity from Arabic and Western perspective. From a psychological viewpoint, the student’s cognition, thinking patterns and habits also have a role in knowledge acquisition. The field of graphic design is not equipped with a decent framework which necessitates certain modes of instruction; appropriate to the discipline. The results of the study revealed that the psychological aspect of creativity needs to be adequately understood in order to enhance creativity in graphic design education.</p>

In the article, the issue of the influence of modern digital technologies on legal culture is analyzed from the perspective of current post-classical methodology, primarily constructivism and anthropocentrism as areas of sociological jurisprudence. The legal culture of Russian society is analyzed based on the historical and anthropological theory of law in conjunction with legal tradition. The vital role of legal culture in the mechanism for constructing social reality is emphasized. The concept of legal culture integrates legal and non-legal elements; it is synthesizing for the individual with its legal status, a society with its legal system, the state with the legislation it adopts and the law enforcement system it forms. It has been shown that the dynamics of legal culture amid digitalization is determined by the relationship of traditional and new legal values, as well as the contradiction between traditionalism and universalism in their axiological aspect. Digitalization affects the individual and collective legal consciousness of legal subjects as carriers of legal culture, thereby determining the dynamics of its fundamental characteristics. The influence of digital technologies on the value content of Russian legal culture is also examined. The dynamics of legal values in a digital society is presented. It is highlighted that the transfer of legal culture between generations is carried out through social relay. Digitalization entails a “digital divide” between generations, disrupts existing mechanisms for the transfer of legal experience and legal values, since the younger generation is much more immersed in a virtual space where they carry out essential social communication than the older generation. In this context, a systematic and focused effort by the state and civil society institutions is needed to take advantage of the opportunities offered by digital technologies for the legal education of young people.

Over the past few decades, technological advancements have established digital tools as an indispensable pedagogical resource in the realm of modern education. In the field of medical education, there is growing interest inhow these digital tools can be effectively integrated to enhanceundergraduate surgical education. However, despite their well-documented potential benefits, research specifically investigating the current use of digital technology inundergraduate surgical education remains limited, highlighting a critical gap in the existing literature. To address this research gap, this scoping review aims to elucidate the current utilisation of digital technologies in undergraduate surgical education by addressing the research question: 'How are digital technologies currently being utilised in undergraduate surgical education to meet surgical learning outcomes'. A scoping review was performed, adopting the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) framework. A comprehensive search strategy was conducted using the search terms 'technology' OR 'simulation' OR 'virtual reality' OR 'augmented reality' OR 'digital' OR 'online' AND 'undergraduate' AND 'surgical' on multiple electronic bibliographic databases including PubMed, Medline, ERIC, Embase, Scopus and Web of Science. These search terms were executed using both free-text and MeSH terms, with search terms combined using Boolean operators to ensure all relevant citations were captured. All search results were screened against the eligibility criteria using Covidence, a web-based software platform, using a two-stage process. Subsequently, all included studies were reviewed, and the extracted data was systematically sorted and organised, with the findings presented graphically accompanied by descriptive narratives. A thematic analysis was also performed to identify themes within the data to synthesise key findings. This scoping review revealed three key findings. First, the use of digital tools in surgical education has been steadily increasing over the past few decades, with the COVID-19 pandemic accelerating the integration of technology into surgical education. Second, this review also highlighted the key role of anatomy within surgical education, with most included studies reporting the use of digital technologies to enhance anatomy teaching. Finally, this review provided an overview of various digital tools used in surgical education and their associated user experiences. Overall, most studies indicated that digital technologies are well-received by students, with many advocating for their continued use insupplementing surgical education even beyond the pandemic. This review provides a crucial foundation for understanding the evolving role of digital innovations in shaping undergraduate surgical education. To enhance undergraduate surgical education, integrating appropriate digital learning tools can provide more learner-centred and personalised learning experiences. Educators must recognise that there is no 'one-size-fits-all' approach, and a flexible multimodal strategy is necessary to meet diverse learning needs. As technology continues to evolve and its role in education grows, this review offers valuable insights into the current use of digital tools in surgical education, highlighting opportunities for improvement and innovation to further enhance undergraduate surgical experience.

Critical thinking is an essential skill not only for educational achievement but also to enhance the quality of life (Bakry et al., 2019, pp. 632-633). However, Yemen has not traditionally encouraged or utilized critical thinking in graphic design education, a field of study where critical thinking is required to think beyond a problem to create solutions to existing and new problems. Design does not come up with the same solution for each project but looks for new ideas and solutions that have culturally relevant answers to solve a problem (Barbour, 2016). Currently there is a lack of research in the areas of critical thinking in graphic design education in Yemen. To Nordin and Surajudin (2015), Ijtihad is a representative for Higher-Order Thinking Skill that may reflect the Tawhid of Allah (God’s unification) and supported their claim with a hadith (the prophet statements): “Those who know himself, he may know his God” (Nordin and Surajudeen, 2015, p. 37). Thus, in knowing oneself, the lifelong learner needs to have self-regulation to be able to use critical thinking (Szabo, 2019). In exploring the relationship between the Islamic concept of Ijtihad (individual reasoning) and the Western notion of critical thinking, there are several points that require consideration. In particular, establishing what critical thinking means in the context of Western design education relative to Ijtihad’s role in Islamic education. The focus of this presentation is exploring the relationship between the western notion of critical thinking and the equivalent Islamic concept of Ijtihad. It highlights the five elements of Ijtihad: Tadabbur (learning and understanding before judging an idea), Tafkih (analysing using al-Qalb (heart) that depends on al-Aqal (mind)), Tafakkur (reflecting and examining), Ta’qil (gathering information before jumping to the conclusion), and Tadhakkur (summarising to understand wisely). Critical thinking is culturally relative, so it is important to study this phenomenon considering the Yemeni culture proposing a suitable holistic framework of Ijtihad. This research draws on a Ph.D. study in-progress that investigates critical thinking in graphic design education in Yemen from an Islamic perspective. Interviews with Yemeni educators were conducted to explore the concept of critical thinking and Ijtihad. This research ultimately aims to identify essential techniques of thinking that can be shaped to reflect Ijtihad, alongside identifying appropriate adult learning strategies developed by Western educators and researchers to enhance students' critical thinking. The outcome of this study will distinguish frameworks within graphic design curricula promoting students’ critical thinking and reflecting these from a Western context to a Yemeni one considering Ijtihad.

This research investigates the effects of digital drawing tools on imagination in comparison to the conventional drawing tools within the educational frame of architectural design. The significance of this study lays in the critique on the utilization of different digital drawing tools in the educational frame, seeking to find the main effects the different types of tools have on students' imagination. This study has taken imagination faculty as factor since the highest level of mental abilities is found in this specific faculty and design students cannot permit any obstacle in front of their imagination design capabilities. The problem upon which this study is based, beside the fact that the digital technology is a dialectic issue in the educational framework, its effects are also unknown as far as the students' imagination capacities are concerned. The case study involved the comparison between two groups; one group relying strongly on digital tools while the other depends merely on conventional tools, herein are students' imagination capacities as well as drawing capabilities investigated. Also the teaching staff opinions were taken from each student group by means of a questionnaire. This study has found that there is a positive relationship between drawing and imagination capabilities. And students using conventional drawing tools merely have higher imagination capabilities score as well as drawing capabilities score according to a test and evaluation form designed specifically for this study. The majority of teaching staff found that students with higher capabilities in drawing by conventional tools encompass also higher capability in imagination.

PurposeAdvances in digital technologies and the growing number of touch points have had a significant impact on the shopping behaviour of omnichannel customers. Several research papers have explored different facets of omnichannel, but only a few have thoroughly explored the literature on showrooming and webrooming simultaneously. This paper aims to identify the key groups of antecedents influencing customer buying behaviour in omnichannel, under the influence of digital technologies, with a particular focus on showrooming and webrooming.Design/methodology/approachOur study conducted a systematic literature review to identify the factors influencing customers’ buying behaviour in omnichannel, which have been the subject of academic discussion over the last decade. We finalized 149 articles for the thematic analysis and identified three groups of antecedents: channel-related, product-related and consumer-related with their subgroups.FindingsUnder channel-related antecedents, cost and perceived benefits, search convenience, need for interaction and situational circumstances have been identified as major attributes. The expressiveness of the product, product demonstration and search and experienced products have been identified under product-related antecedents, followed by price consciousness, past experiences, perceived risks and shopping motivations as leading attributes under consumer-related antecedents. The study revealed the multifaceted influence of digital technologies on omnichannel buying behaviour. Digital technologies are shaping the antecedents related to channels, products and consumers. Digital technologies simultaneously mediate between antecedents and the selection of a specific path within an omnichannel environment. Showrooming and webrooming should no longer be seen as general concepts. The rise of digital technologies has led to the development of new consumer journey patterns and the blurring of distinctions between showrooming and webrooming. A conceptual framework has been proposed to understand consumers' omnichannel behaviour, having considered the identified antecedents and the role of digital technologies.Practical implicationsThis study advances the academic understanding of consumer behaviour in omnichannel under the influence of digital technologies and provides important implications for omnichannel management. With the advancement of digital technologies such as augmented reality and virtual reality, retailers should implement channel integration strategies to bridge the gap between online and offline channels, providing a memorable shopping experience for omnichannel customers.Originality/valueThis study is unique because it identifies and analyses the antecedents of consumer behaviour in omnichannel settings under the influence of digital technologies. It also uncovers new potential combinations of showrooming and webrooming patterns. The proposed framework can help retailers in their future planning of omnichannel strategies.

As an artist I work mainly with digital drawing tools, but I also have this feeling of alienation towards digital drawing: As an artist educated around the 80s/90s, the classic analog drawing is the basis for my understanding of both analogue anddigital drawing, and my experience with the digital drawing tools is filtered through this early training.

In my research I have been testing various digital hardware and software to see how they work, and what kind of results they make. In my presentation I will look at the different quality of lines various hardware and software makes, show some of my line tests from different digital technology and reflect on my own drawing process. I will also reflect on my experience when working with digital tools and the experience I get from the finished works. The presentation will be illustrated with my own digital drawings made specially as part of my research.
Drawing is an act traditionally done with a drawing tool held in the hand to make a line on a surface. Basically, the physical action - the gesture itself - is the same, whether I draw analog or digital: I hold the pen in the same way, move my hand and arm in the same way. But what exists between the hands gesture, the tip of the pen and the resulting line, is different in analog and digital drawing, and the line itself is also different. The digital drawing tools add their own qualities to the lines and the drawings.

I will look at some of the differences I experience between digital and analog drawing: I see digital drawing both as a sort of drawing among many others, and at the same time as something completely different, it adds something other than traditional drawing tools.

The use of technology has grown significantly at the universities in recent years. Blackboards have been replaced with PowerPoint presentations, online courses, and videos. Nowadays all universities incorporate technologies into their curriculum in some form. They have digitilised their whole education system by recognising the function of digital classes. More and more aspects of today's world become digital because of the advancement of the internet, mobile phones, mobile apps, tablets, laptops, and other gadgets, Digital education is replacing conventional education in classrooms at many universities and colleges. The purpose of the paper is to demonstrate how teachers may build their curriculum and support materials, employing the most creative side to personalise learning, using modern technologies. Although, many people favour traditional teaching methods, the possibilities are endless when technology is integrated into the classroom. The education has become much more accessible, with a wide choice of learning techniques. Teachers should think about why students want to use the technology in the classroom rather than need it. It will surely assist educators in tracking a student progress and developing innovative lesson strategies. Students who learn using technology can build skills that will help them to succeed in the future. Methodology of the study is based on general research methods of analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction, observation and abstraction, which are used to systematise achievements in the theory and practice of modelling systems of different nature in the humanities and, in
