Abstract

Refresher courses are a common pathway for updating the knowledge and skills of nurses returning to practice. The Arizona Board of Nursing requires a refresher course for nurses who practice less than 960 hours in the 5 years before licensure re- newal. The long-term effectiveness of registered nurse (RN) refresher courses was evaluated by examining employment among refresher cohort nurses (RCNs) 4 years after course completion and comparing the results to those for the reference population of RNs (RRNs). Results revealed that slightly more RCNs (85% vs. 80% and 82%) renewed their license than RRNs. RCNs worked less often in hospitals yet more often in medical-surgical practice and more often part time and seasonally. This study confirms that refresher courses are a cost-effective way to increase the working RN population. The study provides evidence to support medical-surgical-based refresher courses with optional course work in specialty areas and clinical experiences in a variety of settings.
