Abstract

Abstract Healthcare systems are primarily focused on treating patients’ conditions after a confirmed diagnosis. The emerging field of precision health targets early detection and tailored treatment of health conditions, by continuously monitoring health and wellbeing in all people. Active monitoring and assessment can be achieved through continuous, portable and implantable health-monitoring devices, providing comprehensive picture of human health and lifestyle. Emerging technologies have the potential to drive the impact of precision health. Development of unobtrusive monitoring technologies will support long-term user engagement and data collection. Innovative technologies are constantly evolving. As a result, there is a need to better understand the landscape of available and emerging technologies that can contribute to the collection of data for precision health. Using information from the academic literature, patent databases and news sources, this paper presents an overview of current and emerging sensing and monitoring technologies suitable for precision health, with particular attention given to high demand technologies such as mobile and portable devices, wearables and implantable sensors.
