Our Society is successful because of the many volunteers who contribute their time and energy for the good of the EMC Society and their fellow EMC colleagues. The IEEE EMC Society spansars a number of awards to recogmizee thase people who have made significant contributions to the Society and/or the EMC profession. These awards are normally presented at the awards luncheon during the annual symposium. In 2021, the awards will be presented during an online awards ceremony that will take place during the virtual symposium. We had a very successful virtual awards presentation ceremony in 2020, which was well attended and appreciated by the EMC Society members. (You can see a video recording of the 2020 awards ceremony in this link: https://www.emcs.org/on-demand-webinars.html.)

©2020 IEEE Electromagnetic Compatibility Magazine -Volume 9 -Quarter 1where G(f) is given by equation 1.The most common application of this definition of effective sine-wave bandwidth is steady-state signals having well-defined amplitude and phase relationships. When the phases are no longer well-defined, such as in uniformlydistributed random or "white" noise, it becomes more meaningful to utilize equivalence in the sense of equivalent effective power, as in Figure 4b.

This issue has three articles on the IEEE EMC Society and its history. We begin with the review of EMC Society Newsletters 50 years ago, 25 years ago, and 10 years ago. This issue has two Newsletters from 50 years ago; Issue No. 24 from December of 1962 and Issue No. 25 from January of 1963. (This is due to a change in timing from the Newsletter and its Fall-Winter-Spring-Summer format to the EMC Society magazine and its first quarter-second quarter-third quarter-fourth quarter nomenclature). We have one Newsletter from 25 years ago from the Winter of 1988. Finally, we have the Winter of 2003 Newsletter (Issue #196) for our review of “10 years ago.”

Publication of Amendments to EMC Society Constitution and Bylaws: From time to time, amendments to the Constitution and Bylaws (C&BL) of the EMC Society are required in order to maintain their relevance and to align them with the organizational structure of the Board of Directors (BoD). The changes shown below were approved by the IEEE EMC Society Board of Directors and approved by the IEEE. In accordance with the procedures for amending the Constitution and Bylaws, they are being published here. These amendments become effective 30 days after publication unless ten percent of the Society members object. Comments or objections may be sent to: fr.maradei@ieee.org.

EMC Standards Activity was busy as usual during the 2020 IEEE International Virtual Symposium on EMC+SIPI. While many of us look forward to our annual face-to-face meetings of our Working Groups and Technical Committees during the annual symposium, this year was not to be. With the pandemic, our meetings became virtual during the month of August. This enabled many guests and others interested in our activities to attend and learn more — virtually! Following you will find a summary of some of the significant activity that took place during the symposium. We also received good news about the approval of two of our standards that were approved shortly before (P1848) or shortly after (P370) the symposium. We hosted our first IBIS Summit, sponsored by the IBIS Open Forum — an organization driving the simulation and modeling of integrated circuit inputs and outputs, which are used in PCB functional verification, timing closure, and EMI/SI prediction. Following the symposium, the Standards Development and Education Committee (SDECom) Chair, Ross Carlton, delivered a System-level ESD Tutorial and EMC Expert Panel, sponsored by the EMC Society, at the 2020 EOS/ESD Symposium. EMC luminaries Bob Scully and Colin Brench joined Ross as tutorial speakers and panelists. During the Expert Panel, they discussed the need for the ESD Association and the EMC Society to work on a standard regarding how to test ICs for their system-level characteristics. As you can see from the articles below, EMC Standards are alive and well! We invite you to join us in developing standards and/or collaborating with other organizations, such as the ESD Association and the IBIS Open Forum. Please contact our EMC Society Vice President for Standards, Ed Hare, at w1rfi@arrl.org for more information on how you can get involved.

The IEEE International Symposiums sponsored by the EMC Society are a key element of the EMC Society's organization and purpose in the engineering arena. Only one Symposium every year is designated as the IEEE International Symposium on EMC. In the IEEE EMC Society Newsletter for the summer of 2005 (Issue No. 206), there was an article covering the first 25 IEEE International Symposiums on EMC. The table showing these 25 Symposiums is duplicated below.

A common request from EMC Society members, through feedback at the annual International Symposium on EMC, for example, is that members want more information on the Society's sponsored standards. This is something the Society is keen to provide. One part of that is to update and evolve the web pages since these are a first port-of-call for most of the members looking for information. This article introduces what is currently there and invites you to take a look around and get back in touch with me, Alistair Duffy (apd@dmu. ac.uk) as Chair of the Standards Development Committee, or Don Heirman (d.heirman@att.net) as Vice President for Standards, with any comments or suggestions about what you would like to see there. There are changes afoot in the EMC Society's standards activities and these will be reflected later in the year. The main change is that the Standards Development Committee (SDCom) and the Standards Education and Training Committee (SETCom) are merging. However, the current status is reported here but there will be an update next year in the EMC Society Magazine.

One of the interesting aspects of being the chair of the History Committee of the EMC Society is the opportunity to be invited to inspect and explore the belongings of EMC Society officers after they have passed away. Of course, the purpose is to seek important papers and other video evidence of the officers and their impact on the engineers in the EMC Society.

As per our usual format, we have three historical-based articles in this issue of the EMC Society magazine: 1. Review of EMC Society newsletters from 50, 25, and 10 years ago 2. A reprinting of one issue of the Quasies and Peaks newsletter (a precursor to the EMC Society newsletter) 3. A special article on one EMC Society Member's thoughts on archiving technical materials

As part of the IEEE EMC Society's 50th Anniversary in 2007, a study was done on the most “popular” papers published in the EMC Society Transactions on EMC. The comparison was generated by manually reviewing the Transactions and recording the number of times a paper was referenced. This study culminated in a listing of the most frequently referenced papers over the first 50 years of the EMC Society.

During the 2016 IEEE International Symposium on EMC in Ottawa, Canada, the EMC Society Women in Engineering (WIE) liaison Irina Kasperovich continued the tradition of holding a WIE IEEE EMC Society event. This tradition was initiated at the 2015 Joint IEEE International Symposium on EMC and EMC Europe in Dresden, Germany by the president of the EMC Society, Dr. Frank Sabath. In addition to the luncheon meeting there was also the WIE table top promotional exhibit. The WIE exhibit was on display during the EMC Symposium week in the exhibit hall area. Elena Uchiteleva, who is the Regional Coordinator of IEEE WIE Region 7 (Canada) was promoting the WIE at the booth. Many people stopped by to inquire about WIE. All promotional items that were provided for the booth by WIE were taken by the end of the Symposium. The WIE also provided 800 WIE flyers that were inserted in the registration Symposium bags which were distributed to all the attendees.
