In this work I propose an experimental analysis of the role of Complementizer Deletion (CD) in embedded stripping in Italian. I follow Wurmbrand (2017), who proposes the existence of a typological bipartition of languages, namely those which only allow embedded stripping in the absence of the complementizer and those which allow embedded stripping without resorting to CD. In this article, I consider the results of a Likert scale on Italian sentences, on 58 subjects, and conclude that the availability of embedded stripping correlates with the absence of the complementizer. Unexpectedly, CD is preferred over complementizer realization even in indicative embedded sentences, which generally do not allow the complementizer to be deleted. In the article I propose an analysis of this phenomenon based on mood, epistemic heads, and Double Access Reading.

AcCompl-it @ EVALITA2020: Overview of the Acceptability & Complexity Evaluation Task for Italian
  • Jan 1, 2020
  • Dominique Brunato + 5 more

The Acceptability and Complexity evaluation task for Italian (AcCompl-it) was aimed at developing and evaluating methods to classify Italian sentences according to Acceptability and Complexity. It consists of two independent tasks asking participants to predict either the acceptability or the complexity rate (or both) of a given set of sentences previously scored by native speakers on a 1-to-7 points Likert scale. In this paper, we introduce the datasets distributed to the participants, we describe the different approaches of the participating systems and provide a first analysis of the obtained results.

The development of the 4.0 revolution era is very influential on technological developments. Students are required to be more active and independent in learning in developing their potential. This study aims to determine the practicality of cognitive conflict-based e-books to integrate real experimental video analysis to improve students' conceptual understanding. This research method is development research or Development and Research. The development model used is the Plomp 2013 development model, which consists of three stages, namely the preliminary research, development or prototype phase and the Assessment phase. The e-book design developed is based on four syntaxes of cognitive conflict-based learning models, namely activation of preconceptions and misconceptions, presentation of cognitive conflicts, discovery of concepts and similarities, reflection. In the third syntax, real experiment video analysis is integrated. The instrument used is a one to one and small group practical sheet instrument. The assessment of the instrument is based on three components, namely 1) ease of use, 2) attractiveness, 3) benefits. The Instrument was analyzed with a Likert Scale. The results of the analysis show that cognitive conflict-based e-books that integrate real experimental video analysis to improve students' understanding of concepts have been practically used in physics learning.

Incorporating public priorities in the Ocean Health Index: Canada as a case study
  • May 24, 2017

  • Rémi M Daigle + 4 more

The Ocean Health Index (OHI) is a framework to assess ocean health by considering many benefits (called ‘goals’) provided by the ocean provides to humans, such as food provision, tourism opportunities, and coastal protection. The OHI framework can be used to assess marine areas at global or regional scales, but how various OHI goals should be weighted to reflect priorities at those scales remains unclear. In this study, we adapted the framework in two ways for application to Canada as a case study. First, we customized the OHI goals to create a national Canadian Ocean Health Index (COHI). In particular, we altered the list of iconic species assessed, added methane clathrates and subsea permafrost as carbon storage habitats, and developed a new goal, 'Aboriginal Needs', to measure access of Aboriginal people to traditional marine hunting and fishing grounds. Second, we evaluated various goal weighting schemes based on preferences elicited from the general public in online surveys. We quantified these public preferences in three ways: using Likert scores, simple ranks from a best-worst choice experiment, and model coefficients from the analysis of elicited choice experiment. The latter provided the clearest statistical discrimination among goals, and we recommend their use because they can more accurately reflect both public opinion and the trade-offs faced by policy-makers. This initial iteration of the COHI can be used as a baseline against which future COHI scores can be compared, and could potentially be used as a management tool to prioritise actions on a national scale and predict public support for these actions given that the goal weights are based on public priorities.

  • Usep Kustiawan + 5 more

Pedagogic competence is mandatory for every teacher to master. It is necessary to provide training to teachers to improve their competence. The training provided can be based on hybrid learning moderated by TPACK. Thus, the purpose of this study is to determine the effect of hybrid learning-based training on pedagogic competence through TPACK as a moderating variable. This research utilizes experimental quantitative analysis. The population in this study was all BIMTEK training participants, amounting to 83 kindergarten educators throughout Malang. Measurements in this study used a Likert scale. Several tests used in this research are instrument validity test, instrument reliability test, classical assumption test, homogeneity test, and hypothesis testing. The result obtained from this study can be concluded that hybrid learning-based training moderated with good TPACK abilities can improve the pedagogic competence of teachers.

Rationale and objectives: To understand how breast screen readers classify the difficulty of normal screening mammograms using common lexicon describing normal appearances. Cases were also assessed on their suitability for a single reader strategy. Materials and Methods: 15 breast readers were asked to interpret a test set of 29 normal screening mammogram cases and classify them by rating the difficulty of the case on a five-point Likert scale, identifying the salient features and assessing their suitability for single reading. Using the False Positive Fractions from a previous study, the 29 cases were classified into 10 low, 10 medium and nine high difficulties. Data was analyzed with descriptive statistics. Spearman's correlation was used to test the strength of association between the difficulty of the cases and the readers’ recommendation for single reading strategy. Results: The ratings from readers in this study corresponded to the known difficulty level of cases for the 'low' and 'high' difficulty cases. Uniform ductal pattern and density, symmetrical mammographic features and the absence of micro-calcifications were the main reasons associated with 'low' difficulty cases. The 'high' difficulty cases were described as having ‘dense breasts’. There was a statistically significant negative correlation between the difficulty of the cases and readers’ recommendation for single reading (r = -0.475, P = 0.009). Conclusion: The findings demonstrated potential relationships between certain mammographic features and the difficulty for readers to classify mammograms as 'normal'. The standard Australian practice of double reading was deemed more suitable for most cases. There was an inverse moderate association between the difficulty of the cases and the recommendations for single reading.

The development of research abilities is a necessary competency for students of Engineering and Science. Regardless of the engineering field of interest, the development of global competencies influences their professional performance. In the present work, we describe the impact, from the students' perception, of the early approach in research activities that involves critical thinking, innovation, problem-solving, self-direction, leading, and written communication abilities. To introduce the students to Research-Based Learning (RBL), we asked them to develop a solution to a problem presented in a first-semester science class in a university focused on developing technical and transversal competencies. This work proposes a teaching methodology based on RBL, which includes the appropriate use of search tools, data analysis, and writing skills, taking advantage of the institution's resources. Simultaneously, we looked for an effective research methodology to build a solid theoretical framework relevant to their experimental results. Moreover, we aimed to link the theoretical course contents to the student's engineering field through RBL activities. The sample under study had 98 students taking an experimental physics and statistical analysis course; 49 in an experimental group (class) were guided using RBL, and the other students were in the control group. The evaluation of the learning outcomes was carried out comparing the pre-and-post surveys, using a 5-point Likert scale (ranging from strongly disagree to strongly agree). The statistical analysis of the experimental guided group results showed an increase in critical thinking, innovation, problem-solving, and self-direction compared to the control group students. However, the leadership competency did not show any improvement in both groups. We concluded that implementing the RBL methodology for students in the early stages of engineering education promoted and reinforced the development of technical and transversal competencies

  • M Fatchurahman + 3 more

The purpose of this study was to decide whether the Solution Focused Brief Therapy group counseling could improve the career choice decision-making ability. This study applies a quasi-experimental approach with a population of 47 students at the Muhammadiyah 1 Palangkaraya Senior High School. The sample amounted to sixteen people takes purposefully from the results of the Likert scale of career choice with low understanding criteria in career choice and the results of the recommendations of counseling guidance teachers in schools. The research data were collected by several data collection instruments, namely scales, observations, and a checklist of students' problems. The results of the experimental group's statistical analysis showed that the significance value of the t-test value was -1,700, with a significance level of 0.234. Because T count 1,894, the null hypothesis test is accepted, and the alternative hypothesis test rejects. While in the control group, the significance of the t-test value was 0.823, with a significance level of 0.438. The T count <T table (df = 7) with a value of 0.823 <1.894 then, the nulled hypothesis test is accepted. From the results of the two groups, there was a more significant influence on the solution-focused therapy group's counseling services than the group counseling without using techniques on students' ability to make career choice decisions.
