Abstract
This chapter talks about prosecutions or criminal proceedings which are normally instituted on behalf of a police force, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), or a body with statutory powers, such as the Serious Fraud Office, a Secretary of State, or a local authority. It emphasizes that the DPP is the head of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and is under the general supervision of the Attorney General. It also describes the criminal process which has involved prosecution, trial, and sentence. The chapter looks at other methods of prosecution which are being used to deal quickly and proportionately with low-level or first-time offenses. It explains how summons are issued as a result of a complaint, which is a written or verbal allegation made before a justice in respect of anything which is within the civil jurisdiction of a magistrates' court to make an order.
