Abstract

Several accidents are described in which fires and explosions with electrostatic ignition sources have occured. These accidents are used to illustrate the precautions that should be taken to avoid the accumulation of dangerous electrostatic charges, and, in particular, nine simple rules are given, which, if followed, would reduce the electrostatic ignition risk in the majority of circumtances.
