Abstract

A novel polyvinylidene fluoride/poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid) lithium salt (PVDF/PSSLi) composite membrane has been successfully produced by a facile route. This membrane is proven to be effective for depressing polysulfide shuttle in lithium-sulfur battery, leading to higher discharge capacity and better durability in comparison with the commercial PP separator. The Li-S cell with PVDF/PSSLi separator delivers a discharge capacity of 1194 mAh/g with average Coulombic efficiency of 97% at 0.2 C. Especially, the PVDF/PSSLi membrane exhibits excellent cycling performance at 0.5 C, and the corresponding capacity decay is just 0.26% per cycle during 200 cycles, while that of PP separator is 0.43%; moreover, it possesses stable and high Coulombic efficiency of beyond 97% during cycling.
