Abstract

The electronic absorption spectrum of benzene adsorbed on porous Vycor glass was investigated in the near ultraviolet between room and liquid-hydrogen temperatures. The spectrum consists primarily of absorptions characteristic of the gas phase with additional features which are interpreted as characteristic of the adsorbed state. Adsorption isotherms for the system were measured and from these the isosteric heat of adsorption and entropies of adsorption for two models calculated. The entropies of adsorption for the same two models were calculated statistically and from comparison between experimental and theoretical entropy values it is concluded that the ``mobile gas'' model is more nearly applicable here.
