Abstract

As library reserves, interlibrary loan services, and other document distribution systems migrate from traditional print to electronic media, individuals with disabilities either have unparalleled opportunities for access or face barriers due to inaccessible document formats. Most library document delivery systems use proprietary formats, such as Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF), created in ways that do not utilize accessibility features. Ultimately, this problem calls for a reliable, trusted system that supports the secure delivery of accessible electronic documents. Key stakeholders are actively collaborating toward this goal, but in the meantime, libraries must consider strategies for effectively addressing patrons’ immediate access needs.
