Abstract

The ( 3 × 3 ) R30° structure formed by 1/3 monolayer of Pb on Ge(111) undergoes an structural phase transition to a low-temperature 3×3 structure. The electronic band structure of the 3×3 phase has been probed using angle-resolved photoemission. The band topology along different high symmetry directions of the 3×3 Brillouin zone (( Γ ̄ K ̄ ) 3×3,( Γ ̄ M ̄ ) 3×3 and ( K ̄ M ̄ ) 3×3) has been experimentally determined. A comparison with the calculated band structure reveals significant disagreements. Their origin is discussed on the basis of the existing models for the phase transition.
