Abstract

LEED, AES, ELS, and work function (CPD) investigations at room temperature are reported on the adsorption of CO on Al(100). Five stages in the adsorption process are observed. The dissociation of CO gives a progressive incorporation of oxygen and carbon with aluminum oxide and carbide formation. The kinetics of this formation is strongly influenced by the initial state of the sample surface.
