Abstract

Lead-free Sr and Nb co-doped Bi1/2Na1/2Ti1-xNbxO3–Ba1-ySryZrO3 (BNTN-BSZ, with x, y = 0 – 0.030) piezoceramics were synthesized by a conventional solid-state reaction method and their crystalline phase, microstructure and electromechanical properties were explored. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy analysis show successful synthesis of BNTN-BSZ ceramics. The X-ray diffractogram reveal that Sr and Nb effectively diffused into the BNT–BZ lattice and formed a complete solid solution of BNTN-BSZ having perovskite phase and a pseudocubic symmetry. Sr and Nb doping in BNT-BZ ceramics result in degradation of the remnant polarization and coercive field. However, the field-induced strain was significantly enhanced for composition x = 0.010, giving rise to a dynamic piezoelectric constant (d33∗ = Smax/Emax = 466 pm/V). Furthermore, the depolarization temperature decreased and the room temperature dielectric constant was increased with increasing amount of Sr and Nb concentration.
