Abstract

The growth of VO 2 single crystals by electrolytic reduction of molten V 2O 5 in a crucible made of stabilized ZrO 2 is described. The electrolytic properties of the crucible material were utilized for evolving oxygen from the melt. Needle crystals of VO 2 were grown, up to 5 mm long, cross-section varying from 5 X 5 to 200 X 200 μm 2. Growth rates up to 1 mm/min were observed. All crystals displayed the metal-semiconductor phase transition at 68°C, the jump of conductivity amounting to five orders of magnitude. Nb-doped crystals were also grown. Further development of the techniques is discussed.
