Abstract

A theory of electrokinetics in concentrated suspensions of soft particles (i.e. polyelectrolyte-coated particles) is reviewed with particular emphasis on an Onsager relation between sedimentation potential and electrophoretic mobility. A more general Onsager relation is derived on the basis of the thermodynamics of irreversible processes, which is an extension to high potentials. Expressions for colloid vibration potential (CVP) and electrokinetic sonic amplitude (ESA) are also derived.
