Abstract

The laboratory diagnosis of hereditary angioneurotic edema (HANE), can be confirmed or excluded in patients with symptoms suggestive of the condition by immunochemical determination of C 1 IA and C4. Occasionally, esterolytic assay of C 1 IA, quantitation of C3 and other complement components may be required for the diagnosis. The variants of HANE are described on the basis of the laboratory findings, and a diagnostic scheme is proposed. An application of the electroimmunoassay using a single analytic step for the quantitation of C 1 IA and C4 for screening of HANE is presented.
