Abstract

Fe(III)—Y zeolites have been prepared through iron (III) exchange from acetonitrile—ferric solutions. The presence of free Fe(III) ions in the Y zeolite framework has been identified by cyclic voltammetry of Fe 2+/Fe 3+ redox conversions and Prussian blue formation upon reaction with Fe(CN) 3−/4− 6 and by uv-visible absorption spectra. The powder XRD patterns confirmed the retention of crystallinity and integrity of the zeolite framework after the ion exchange operations. Ion exchange is found to proceed without the formation of any unwanted iron oxo species.
