Abstract

This paper shows the major causes of electric noise in small motors and how they affect noise generation. It shows which factors are important for a particular type of motor. Then it explains why without adequate manufacturing quality controls apparently identical motors can exhibit electrical noise of greatly varying levels, say 10 dB(A). Experiments introducing different design factors and controlled manufacturing defects in prototype motors are also described.
