Abstract

AbstractThe five oblasts (Tula, Kaluga, Orel, Bryansk and Ryazan') in the study area are served by a large electric power industry based on the use of local Moscow Basin brown coal and, to some extent, natural gas tapped from the transmission main line from the Northern Caucasus to Moscow. The core of the power system is made up of the Cherepet' (1.5 million kilowatts), Shchekino (1.07 million kilowatts) and Novomoskovsk central stations in the Tula power system, which serves in effect the entire study region. Capacity is being expanded by the construction of the Ryazan' central station, with an ultimate designed capacity of 3.6 million kilowatts. These stations will continue to use Moscow Basin brown coal over the long term, with increasing portions of the coal to be enriched at minehead washing plants.
