Abstract

The bioluminescence of coelomic cells of Lampito mauritii has been monitored in oxygenated phosphate buffer saline (pH 7.4) after subjecting the coelomic cells to d.c. electric fields of different strengths; these cells have also been examined by electrochemical and optical techniques. The results suggest that the electric field produces poration of the bioluminescent cells, resulting in higher consumption of dissolved oxygen in the medium. Enhancement of bioluminescence intensity has also been observed. At field strengths of greater than 125 V cm −1, optical microscopic examination reveals that agglomeration and fusion of the cells has occurred.
