Abstract

The simulation of the consolidation process by electric analog simulators is investigated. The simulator consists of an analog model, which is a scaled-down version of the compressible material and its boundaries, and excitation-response measurement equipment. The analogy of form of electrical and hydraulic systems is shown by finite difference approximations. Design criteria, such as calculation of resistance and capacitance and selection of scale factors to relate model and prototype properties, are presented. The use of the simulator is demonstrated by examples. Apparent sources of error include capacitance leakage and lumping, both of which are inevitable. The consolidation expression for three-dimensional flow and its electrical analogy are derived.
